Have you ever thought about WW2 and thought no man has ever fought with an umbrella well think twice! Allison Digby was born in 1917 in Shropshire, England. This city bordered Wales.

His father also served in the British Army and was gassed in the trenches.
This led to him dying a few years later. Despite this, Digby and his siblings joined the army.
Digby became an officer, but then WW2 had begun. Nazi Germany invaded France and it quickly fell into the hands of Germany. Then Digby's brother died in the battle of El Alamein.

Then the Soviets got pushed to Moscow. After that, the Soviets started to push the Nazis so far back. In 1944, Digbey was put in charge of the operation of Marget Garden.

A plan to land in the Benelux, this consists of Luxemburg, Belgium and the Netherlands. After they landed, Digby got afraid that his radio would not work so he trained his men to use bugles to send messages to other troops and he was right!
A bugle is a brass instrument like a small trumpet, typically without valves or keys and used for military signal. The radio was operating on a line that no one was listening to and his bugle idea proved useful.

Fun fact: Did you know that Digbey's bugle idea was used during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century?
Now the British troops landed north of Arnum and came across German tanks but instead they went around these forces and cut through the back garden of the local residents. Next, they attacked German troops and killed/took prisoner 150 German troops as well as members from the SS (protection squad) while they had 1 dead and 1 wounded.
Digby also wore a red Beret instead of a standard issue helmet his troops were wearing. He also carried an umbrella he had brought from England. The reason was so his troops could identify him. He would casually walk around while waving his umbrella in the air.
