Fern got out of bed super early in the morning of August. The first day of school was on the way, and she was so excited she could jump 10 feet! She’s going to middle school for the first time. She’s heard a lot of stories about middle school, how amazing it is and how much more freedom you get. She knew it was gonna be hard to get used to it, but she was excited to meet her new teachers and maybe make some new friends. Before she went to take a shower Fern went to her closet and picked out the best outfit she could find in there. a pink and white striped t shirt and some jeans that have little holes in them. She picked out some white
socks and her favorite Nike shoes. Then she took a shower. After her shower, she had to try everything together, her outfit needed to be perfect for the first day. She looked fabulous! ‘oh yeah, I should start fixing my hair too’ she took out her hairbrush and started brushing her ginger colored hair. While she was doing that, her older sister, Savannah had walked in. “What are you doing up, don’t tell me your getting ready this early “ she said tiredly. “It’s not even that early! Plus, I have to wake up early if I wanna get everything done before school.”. Savannah groaned. “It’s 5:30, Fern. . School starts at 8 and ends at 3. Why are you such an early bird?” Fern just giggled at her. “That’s just Fern!"
Fern already had her supplies for school. She got them a few weeks ago, shopping with mom. Fern waited until it was almost time to go, it seemed as if time had went slower just to taunt her. Finally, 7:30 had came around. The school bus would be arriving soon. Fern had never been on a bus before, usually her mom or sister would just drive her to school. But Fern wasn’t little anymore, so she had to. Fern quickly ate her cereal, waved her sister goodbye and headed out the door. The school bus was big compared to her moms car. Inside there were a bunch of seats filled with children her age. They were all chattering and on their phones. Fern just ended up sitting alone on the bus near the back.
‘It’s okay’ Fern said to herself. ‘there’s nothing wrong with sitting alone. The day hasn’t even started yet, todays gonna be great, I know it will.” Fern sat there, trying to hear what the other kids were talking about. She was quiet when it came to most people, so she wouldn’t hang around most. She would mostly just do her work, she loved the feeling of getting an A or a B on a assignment. But she loved observing the people around her, it’s just average Fern. Most of the kids were talking about things like their classes and sports. A few girls were gossiping about some people from their old school. Fern felt uncomfortable around people like that, she feared that they would make fun of her.
Fern took out her paper from her backpack. It was her schedule. She had English first, then math, PE, science, lunch, social studies, and finally computer class. she stared at it, reading it over and over to memorize it all. By the time she was done, the school was right outside the bus door. Fern walked out the door quickly, she wouldn't get used to the bus any time soon. The bell has not rang yet. The school was huge! it looked like a giant mansion. There were kids all around it, crowding together to meet their friends. Fern wished her two friends, Lana and Kyky were there. They both went to a different school, while Fern went to this one. But it was going to be okay, she kept saying to herself, even
though she had no idea where any of her classes were. She tried to ask some kids to hopefully start a conversation but they all just ignored her or made a face. She asked a nearby teacher where her English class was, she was very nice. She also told Fern where all her other classes were to. 'At least the teachers are nice to me' she thought. When the bell finally rang, Fern walked quickly to her class. When she arrived, there were desks, a little bigger than the ones she had in elementary. She sat in the front near the teachers desk. The teacher had brownish grey curly hair that goes to her shoulders, a black t shirt, blue jeans, and some big black glasses.
On the board, it had the teachers name, Mrs. Kelly. Fern looked at her teachers expression. She didnt seem so happy to be teaching today. Soon, most of the kids in her class were settling down. One girl and two boys sat in the same row as her. The girl had her long beautiful blonde hair in two braids, a white crop top, and a light pink skirt. She had mascara and lip gloss on. The two boys had fluffy brown and black hair, wore baggy jeans and a long sweatshirt. 'They looked so cool', Fern thought to herself. 'My outfit looks so stupid compared to theirs.' The two boys stared at her for two seconds and then stared at each other. Fern couldnt see what they did after because the girl was blocking the view,
but she heard the two boys whispering to each other and laughing. She felt her gut drop, she knew that they were somehow laughing about her. Probably about her messy her hair was, or how basic her outfit looked, or how ugly she looked compared to the girl next to her. Class started, but she couldnt even concentrate. Her mind was racing, she felt eyes on her everywhere, she didnt know what to do or how to feel, she just wanted to get the heck out of that room. By the time the bell rang for the next class, Fern practically ran out of there. She didnt even start on the worksheet that her teacher gave her, but she didnt care. She didnt want to see the two boys or anyone in that class. She headed to math.
During math, she calmed down. The teacher was a male, and he introduced himself. They were doing a little worksheet on Algebra. Fern was very confused. There's letters in math? she didn't understand a thing, but she wouldn't dare ask for help. In elementary, her teachers would tell her she was one of the smartest kids in her class, she figured out everything without any help from her teachers or classmates, she cant lose the title. not now. She needed to figure it out herself no matter what, she cant be weak. She didnt figure it out though. For almost the full 30 minutes she just stared at her worksheet, mind blank. By the time she understood it, the bell had already rung.
Then suddenly it hit her. All the students were turning in their papers to the teacher before grabbing their backpacks and heading to their next class, but she had not even started on her first problem. She didnt know what to do, she couldn't just hand the paper blank. She quickly wrote a note on it that she didn't understand any of it and she was sorry for not doing it. She gave it to her teacher and before he could say anything, she was out of sight. The rest of the day was the same exact thing. She couldn't concentrate or understand anything at all, it was like her mind was reset and now she didnt know a thing that she had been taught. She couldnt stand to see the disappointed look on her teacher's
