How does a caterpillar become a butterfly?

It goes through a process called metamorphosis. 

Introduction

Metamorphosis has four stages.

These stages are 

1. Egg                            2. Larva

3. Pupa                         4. Adult

Stage 1 Egg

The butterfly starts as an egg.

The adult butterfly lays eggs on milkweed leaves.

Inside the egg the caterpillar is growing. 

Stage 2 Larva

Once the egg haches, the caterpiller is born.

Caterpillers are butterfly larva. 

Caterpillers need to eat alot to grow.

They start by eating the leaf they were born on.
