It’s not always easy being part of the Rainbow family.
It’s not as colourful as you think. Pink had realised this
from her first day of school, when she arrived with
shiny magenta hair hanging straight to her shoulders
and piercing hot pink eyes, while the rest of the
children stared in astonishment. It was equally
astonishing for these unaccustomed children to see
Pink’s mother beside her, instead with shocking purple
features and her younger brother Orange, with his
flaming hair and eyes.

What made the Rainbow family the way they were was
nothing scientific or miraculous – they were simply born
that way and chose to continue to bare the colours they
were born with.
It began with Pink’s grandparents, Red and White
Rainbow… who had a son called Blue… who married a girl
called Purple… and together had Green, Pink, Orange and
Yellow.
The family were extremely happy and as a result, always
had bright and vivid hair.

Lately however, Pink had been excluded from a group of girls
she always used to play with. A new girl had recently joined
their group. Her hair was lovely and blonde but her mouth
was always a smirk. One day, the new girl had asked
her,“Why are you always pink?”
Pink hadn’t known how to respond. Why was she always pink?
While she was still thinking of a reply, the other girls started
wondering too.
Her best friend had looked up at her and said “Yeah… you’re
weird.” The girls had all laughed and ran off together and
since then had avoided Pink at playtime.

Pink felt very upset. She didn’t understand why these
girls, who had been her friends for years, could ignore
her like this. How could this one new girl suddenly
change everything? The way the girls had treated her,
the things they had said, made her feel… different. She
had never felt any different from anyone before. Having
pink hair and wearing pink clothes shouldn’t make her
any different. She was confused and missed playing with
her group of friends.

Pink had not played with her friends for two weeks now.
Every time she tried to talk to them they would say
things like “We don’t want to be seen with a pink girl,”
and “You’re too weird!”.
She spent her playtimes alone in the school library. She
knew she should talk to someone about it, like her
teacher or her family, but she felt too embarrassed.

A few nights later when Pink was alone in her room, she
noticed something. She had caught a glimpse of herself
in the mirror and realised something was different. She
stared hard and looked at her hair. It was… lighter! Her
hair was much paler than its usual colour. She wondered
why.

Pink remembered her mother telling her that when one
of the Rainbow’s were upset, their hair would slowly lose
its colour. Pink was overjoyed. If her hair became a
normal colour and she started wearing normal clothes,
maybe her friends would like her again! She knew she
had to keep this a secret from her family, as they would
worry about her, so she put her hair up and pulled on a
pink hat.

Over the next few weeks Pink was experiencing
conflicting emotions. One side of her was upset because
her friends were still avoiding her. However, the other
side of her was excited because her hair was quickly
losing its colour. That meant she could soon be normal!
She couldn’t wait for the day when she could reveal her
new self to her friends and play with them again.

One night while having dinner with her family, the topic
of the annual Rainbow Reunion was mentioned. Pink had
forgotten about that! Every year, her entire family got
together and had a party. Pink normally loved going
because they played games and there was delicious food
and they all dressed up but they usually took many
photos.
“Pink, that means you’ll have to take off that hat for
once, you’ve been wearing it for weeks!” her
grandmother Red informed her.
Pink nodded but deep down she was very worried.

Pink was torn. She couldn’t go to the Rainbow Reunion
with pale pink hair but she couldn’t play with her friends
again with hot pink hair. She still had three weeks
before the Reunion so she decided to try and win her
friends back before then.

A week later, Pink pulled her hat off to examine the
colour. All the worry, stress and sadness she had been
through over the past month had caused her hair to
become a very fine and light pink. She knew she was
ready. She had also bought herself some ‘normal’
clothes and now she tried these on. Looking in the
mirror, she hardly recognised herself. She looked very
normal. Almost… boring, but she shrugged this off. She
knew she was ready to show her friends tomorrow.
