Chapter One: Missing
Everyone has parents who have a special job.
Especially my mom.
She works at a bank.
Or so I thought.
On Friday afternoon, I got home from school, feeling overwhelmed by the stress from all of the homework I had.
My mom was in the kitchen, already making the evening meal.
“How was school, honey?” she asked.
I took off my backpack, leaving all of the heavy burdens behind. I slumped in a kitchen chair. “Fine, I guess.” I sighed.
“Fine?” my mom asked, chopping some celery. “Surely it wasn’t that
that bad?”
I sighed again.
“What’s wrong?” My mom looked at me.
We were trapped in utter silence.
After several seconds, I went upstairs to my room and turned on the radio to feel some encouragement. I laid on the bed for what felt like hours. I sang some of my favorite songs and then went downstairs.
Only to find that my mother was gone.
Chapter Two: Discoveries
“MOM!!” I yelled. I looked all around the house, but I couldn’t find her. I frantically searched the house for the third time.
“MOM!” I cried again.
I couldn’t find her.
I ran into the kitchen and found that a pot was boiling over with water. Quickly, I turned off the burner. I opened the lid of the pot to see burnt rice.
Great.
I threw away the rice and grabbed something out of the fridge to eat. I sat at the table and started eating my dinner.
As I sat there, still stunned at the fact that my mother was gone, my golden retriever, Ozzy, came into the kitchen.
“Hey,” I said, talking to my dog. I like to do that sometimes. “Do you know what happened to my mom?”
Little Ozzy only whined.
“Well, that doesn’t help!” I slapped my hands on my legs, unhappy. I just couldn’t wrap my head around all of this. I felt mixed emotions.
I took another bite out of the cheese stick that I was eating.
I did know how to cook, I just didn’t want to do it at the moment.
I didn’t feel like it.
As I got up from the table to get something else to eat, I noticed flour on the counter. I figured that mom had just split it by accident, but never managed to clean it up.
However, I looked more closely and found that there was writing in the flour. It had the letters, “B,A,C,K.”
Back? Back where? Was my mother trying to tell me something? I squinted in my glasses a little harder. I saw more letters - C, L, O, S, E.
Back close.
What did that mean?
Then, I saw the letter “T.”
Back closet.
So, my mom was trying to tell me to go look in the back closet!
I ran out of the kitchen and went into a room. It had a closet that we called, “the back closet.”
I turned the light on and looked through the closet. What was my mom trying to tell me? I kept looking around.
All I saw were a couple of books, bags, clothes, and even a broken pencil.
Nothing important there, I thought.
I kept looking in the closet from head to toe, but didn’t find anything useful.
Then, I actually went through the bags to see if it could contain anything important.
Nothing.
Suddenly, the light above me started flickering. I looked to see what the problem was, but as I looked into the light bulb, I realized that there was some sort of shadow.
Something was in the light bulb.
Carefully, I unscrewed the bulb and an object fell out. I looked at the ground to see what it was.
To my surprise, it was a key.
A key to what? Some kind of box?
The key had three letters engraved on it: AGK.
I wondered what it meant.
Then, I looked through the books.
Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings.
When I got to the last book, it said, “English Dictionary.”
That was strange. Why did we have a dictionary?
I opened it up only to find some sort of box. In the center of it was a keyhole. I glanced at the key I still held in my hand.
Was this the key to the box?
Curious, I took the key and inserted it into the keyhole. I twisted it and pulled it open.
Inside, there was a single folded piece of paper. I grabbed it and opened it up. It read:
Open the side of the wall and there you will find the book. Do this only if it is an emergency. - AGK
There were the letters again! AGK. It was probably the initials of someone’s name. Who was this mysterious person?
I went back to the note. The book. What book was this person talking about?
I glanced at the wall beside me.
“Open the side of the wall…”
This obviously was some sort of mystery. How could my mother know how to do all these things?
Unless she had some sort of training to do these kinds of things. Maybe like a spy. I gasped as I thought of an explanation. Was my mother a spy?
Without thinking, I grabbed the side of the wall.
Nothing happened.
I thought that the wall would just break apart really easily and “the book” would be there.
Nope.
I tried pulling it again.
Still, nothing happened.
I sat down, giving up on what silly thing that I was doing. Besides, I had better things to do, such as -
LOOK FOR MY MOM!!!!!!
I had no idea where she was. What had happened to her?
Chapter Three: The Book
That’s when I realized - it was all of my fault.
It was all of my fault.
If I wouldn’t have been so mad at all of my homework and things, then my mom probably would be here!
But it was all my fault.
Tears started forming in my eyes. I couldn’t do this anymore. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t do anything.
My mom was gone, and there wasn’t anything I could do about it.
I was embarrassed and guilty.
My eyes started getting blurry from the tears welling up. I sat down and put my head on my knees as I weeped.
For several moments, it was very silent.
Suddenly, I felt something licking me. I hung my head up and saw Ozzy. I grinned.
“Thanks Ozzy for being by my side,” I rubbed my dog’s fur. “You have no idea how much you are helping me.”
Then, I got up and looked at the wall another time. I took in a deep breath and yanked the wall with all my might.
“Ugh,” I said in disgust. Once again, nothing happened.
Strangely, Ozzy stood up on his hind legs and moved his paws at the wall.
“What is it? What do you see?” I asked.
When Ozzy moved his paw, I saw a small little circle. It was sticking out slightly. Almost like a button.
I gasped. I pressed the button and to my amazement, a small little compartment pulled open.
“This is incredible,” I told myself, analyzing the mini compartment.
I looked down at my dog and planted kisses on his head.
“Thank you, Ozzy,” I smiled. “You may have just done something very wonderful.”
I looked at the mini compartment again and, sure enough, a thin book sat there.
I reached my hand in and pulled out the book.
“‘The Ultimate Book for Spies’” I read the front cover.
Suddenly, I realized what I was reading.
Spies!
So mom really is a spy!
Chapter Four: Ozzy's Trouble
That night, I lay in my bed, thinking about earlier that day.
I had read a little bit of the spy book and I actually learned a lot.
For example, the first rule about being a spy is this: never give away your true identity. It was pretty cool to learn about that.
I sat up in bed, for I could not go to sleep. I glanced at the sleeping body of Ozzy at the edge of my bed. I smiled at the funny position he lay. Ozzy always slept in absurd positions.
The time was 11:42 before I actually went to sleep.
When I awoke in the morning, I walked straight into the kitchen. I got some cereal out from the cupboard and a spoon and a bowl. I poured the food into my bowl and I was ready to eat.
I prayed for my breakfast and then dove into my favorite, chocolatey cereal.
As I was eating, I saw Ozzy walk in to where I was sitting. I quickly stopped eating, grabbed water and doggy food and poured it into Ozzy’s bowl. He went straight to the water and started lapping it up, like all dogs do.
Then, I went back to eating. So did Ozzy.
When I finished eating, I went into my mom’s room.
“Mom, it’s time to get up!” I ran into her room only to discover an empty bed. That was when all of the memories came flooding back.
The key.
The book.
Mom went missing.
Mom is actually a spy.
I turned away and went back into the kitchen where Ozzy lay on his back.
“Do you need a tummy rub?”
Ozzy whined.
I rubbed his stomach, but he didn’t stand back up.
I raised my eyebrow. “Are you okay, bud?”
After several minutes, Ozzy still wasn’t standing up.
I instantly became worried. What happened to my dog? He was sitting helpless on the floor.
Then an idea popped into my mind. Maybe I could use the spy book for any ideas.
I quickly ran into my room to where the plump book sat, lying on my desk. I grabbed it and went back to the kitchen.
Ozzy looked up at me.
“It’s okay, boy.” I comforted him. “Everything will be okay.”
I flipped pages rapidly, trying quickly to find some sort of way to help my pet. After a few seconds, it was useless.
Oh, what should I do? I asked myself.
That’s when I flipped to the table of contents, and found a chapter entitled, “How to Overcome Difficult Problems.”
Wow. That was exactly what I needed!
I read it out loud:
What should you do in difficult circumstances? Here are some great tips to how
to solve these problems!
How would you rate your problem? Would you consider it from a scratched
arm or to a life or death situation? Keep reading for more facts.
In a matter of life or death:
1. Look for the closest exit. If there is none near you, then keep looking!
2. RUN AWAY FAST!
3. RUN AWAY FAST!
4. RUN AWAY FAST!
5. RUN AWAY FAST!
REALLY?
This was certainly not the best advice for a spy book!
I looked down at innocent little Ozzy, still lying on the ground. Then, I glanced at the home phone and back at my dog.
I slowly walked toward the phone in the hallway. I grabbed the phone and pressed the number 9, and then 1. As I was about to press one more 1, I heard the door crack open.
I put the phone down.
I could not believe my ears.
My mom was coming home!!!!
I ran down the hallway as fast as I could and reached the door.
However, as I reached the door, I heard several voices. Voices that I did not recognize. My eyes went wide. It couldn’t have been my mom. The voices outside were voices that belonged to men.
After I realized that, I ran to my room, scared of what might happen next.
I heard the doorknob being turned.
These strangers were in my house!
I could hear them talking, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying. Quickly, their voices became weaker and weaker, and they must
Chapter Five: Strangers in the House
have been going farther away from me.
Good.
I was safe underneath my pillow.
For now.
After about a half an hour, I heard the voices again. They were drawing near me. Finally, I could hear what they were saying.
“...the boss would be proud,” one deep voice said. He had some kind of accent, but I couldn’t tell what it was.
“But what if we don’t find her?” another low voice came in.
“He will fire us, won’t he?” came a somewhat nervous voice.
“No, Clark, we WILL find her.” said the first voice. “I know we will.”
Then, I heard the sound of a door being opened.
Not my door, but the closet right next to mine.
“Nothing here,” the second voice said. “Just a little closet.”
“ ‘Just a little closet’?” repeated the first voice. I was beginning to think that he was the leader of this little group. “Otis, there could be documents hidden here! Search this instant!”
I heard the noise of things moving. They must have been going through the closet to find these “documents” that the leader said.
Five minutes passed with complete silence; besides the sound of things being thrown around.
“This is the last door to open.” the leader said. “I know we will find her.”
My doorknob started to turn. I quickly covered myself in my bed, hoping not to be seen by these people.
“Come out, come out, wherever you are, Alexa Kurry!” the leader exclaimed.
I covered my mouth from making any noises. I tried not to gasp at the sound of my mother’s name!
“Who goes there?” the not-so-nervous voice said.
I couldn’t see the faces of the people, but I could see the figures of
three men through my thin cover sheets.
I saw one of the figures coming forward to where I was.
I was done for.
I suddenly felt someone’s hand on my shaking body.
Someone whispered something, but I couldn’t tell what they said.
Without warning, someone yanked the covers off from me and I stared into three faces of unknown men.
“It’s a girl,” one of the men said.
He had on a strange neon jacket with sweatpants and a fanny pack. Another man walked toward him and whispered something in his ear. The fanny pack guy nodded and pulled out a pan.
Suddenly, he ran toward me and the next thing I knew, I was knocked unconscious.
Chapter Six: Kidnapped!
“..find anything else?” I heard a strange guy say.
I opened my eyes and saw the three guys that kidnapped me looking through the spy book! They must have found it in my house while I was helplessly trying to hide.
When the men realized I was waking up, they quickly hid the spy book, but I already knew that they had it. I had no idea what they were going to do or say to me.
I remembered when I was reading the spy book, I came across this section of when someone bad is trying to get information from you, you can play it three ways: dumb, serious, or really dumb.
I decided that I would play dumb because I really had no other choice. Before one of the guys spoke to me, I was planning inside my head of what I might say.
Finally, the fanny pack guy opened his mouth. “What is your favorite candy?” he asked.
What? What on earth was he trying to say?
He cleared his throat and asked the question again. “What is your favorite candy?”
My mouth was dry. I didn’t know what he meant. Was this some type of code? If so, then I absolutely had no clue about what it might mean.
So, I played dumb.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “There are several candies out there that are just so good!” After I said that, I noticed that one of the men - who I guessed was the leader - started to get angry a little bit.
But only a little bit.
I remained calm until the fanny pack dude said, “What type of candy do you like? Chocolate? Chewy? Crunchy?”
“Oh,” my cheeks flamed with embarrassment. I finally thought that this wasn’t a code. “I really like chocolate, I guess.”
“Thank you, little lady,” another guy said. He had said it in that accent I had heard before. He must have been the leader. “That helps us very much.”
I blinked. Did that really help them?
“Now,” the leader began. “What is your name?”
“Chelsey,” I lied. My name was really Annabelle, but I didn’t want these strangers to know. I just said my friend’s name instead.
“I see,” the guy with the accent said. I was beginning to think it was some kind of British accent.
It was silent for a moment and then I asked, “What time is it?” I really didn’t know what the time was since I didn’t have a watch on. Besides, it sounded kind of dumb, anyway.
“Why are you asking?” the other guy said. He was not the fanny pack guy, nor was he the leader. He had on a black jacket, kind of like the ones people wore in the 1980’s, and jeans with holes in them. The man also had brown facial hair, but had no hair at the top of his head.
He was one of those bald dudes.
“I just don’t know what time it is. Besides, I am getting hungry.” I really was.
“Well, who cares-”
The leader leaned in close to the bald guy and whispered something into his ear.
“Ah, true,” the bald guy told him.
Then, both of them went away from their little “huddle” and the leader said, “Is there anything you are allergic to?”
That was some random question. I guess he was wondering what I was allergic to, but he could maybe use that against me sometime later. I really wasn’t allergic to anything, so I just said peanuts, since basically everyone is allergic to that.
“Well, Chelsey, in that case,” the bald guy looked at the leader. “We will
just give you some crackers. Peanut-free.”
“Thank you,” I was more interested in the fact that they were actually giving me something to eat rather than the peanut part. I did like peanuts, but I guess it would just have to wait.
Quickly, the three guys left me in the room all by myself. Before I thought they were gone, the leader popped his head through the door and said, “Don’t you dare think about coming out of this room. Or you will-”
“What if I have to go to the bathroom?” I asked.
The British guy groaned. “Through that door over there is the loo.” He pointed to a door on the far side of the room. “But like I said, there will be consequences if you try to come out of this door.” Then he closed the door and locked it shut.
Chapter Seven: A Conversation with the Fanny Pack Guy
Before I knew it, I was sleeping. It was in the same room that I “could not leave.”
The room was small, with no windows.
So I couldn’t escape.
It also had a couch in the center. The fanny pack guy actually came into the room, brought my crackers, and showed me how to pull out the couch into a bed.
I personally thought he was actually kind of nice. He had a friendly conversation with me and wasn’t as scary as the leader was. However, he didn’t mention his name, which was pretty smart for a stranger.
Before long, the sun had set and he told me it was time to go to bed. He unfolded the couch and made my bed for me.
Then, he left.
I thought about the day and quickly went to bed.
🔍 🔍 🔍
When I woke up the next morning, I forgot where I was. Then I realized I actually didn’t know where I was.
The door then creaked open and a guy walked in. It was the fanny pack guy! This time, he had on black pants and a white sweater with a Christmas tree on it.
Odd.
However, he still wore his black, fat fanny pack.
“Good morning, Chelsey,” he smiled at me for the first time.
I grinned back and said, “Good morning, uh, sir,”
He took a sip of some sort of beverage he had in a black coffee mug.
“How long have you been up?” I asked.
The fanny pack guy glanced at his watch. “For about an hour or so. Do you want some breakfast?”
“Oh, yes please!” I was starving.
“Well, we have pancakes in the kitchen and some coffee.”
“I don’t like coffee.”
“We have hot cocoa instead if you want!”
I raised an eyebrow. “Hot cocoa? In May? It’s not even cold outside! Besides, why are you wearing a Christmas shirt?”
The man chuckled. “I sometimes like to just wear some strange things, I guess.”
“Yes, you do!” I giggled. “By the way, why do you have a fanny pack?”
The room fell silent. When I realized he wasn’t answering, I asked,
“May I please have some pancakes now?”
“Oh, sure! Come right out!” he said. He motioned outward to the door.
I started to walk when I suddenly stopped.
“What’s the matter, Chelsey?” he asked.
“A guy said last night that I wasn’t supposed to come out of this door or else I would be in big trouble.”
“Oh,” he said. It was more like an “Oooooh.”
“Well, I guess I can just go get a few pancakes and bring it to you.” he started to walk out of the door, but quickly came back. “And your hot chocolate, too.”
Chapter Eight: The Hot, Hot Chocolate
As I was waiting for my hot chocolate to be delivered, I just sat and stared into space. I was humming a song that was stuck in my head. By the time I got to the chorus, I noticed the spy book lying on the ground.
I went over and picked it up. I assumed that they accidentally dropped it or they totally forgot about it. I flipped through the pages just for the fun of it. When I turned one of the pages, I noticed the spine of the book shifted slightly. I hadn’t noticed that before. Curiously, I analyzed it carefully. I turned it this way and that and at an angle, I saw someone’s handwritten handwriting.
I squinted at the writing and managed to read:
The ISS are dangerous people. If they are being nice to
you, RUN AWAY! Annabelle, you need to trust me. Use
this book as a guide. RUN AWAY!
I was confused. The ISS? Dangerous people? Run away? It took me a while to think for a moment.
Then, I gasped. That was my mom’s handwriting! I knew I had recognized it before. Quickly, I dove into my pocket and grabbed out the key that I still had from the light bulb.
I ran my fingers on “AGK”.
My mom’s initials.
Just as I was about to close the book, a knock on the door startled me. That’s when I remembered the fanny pack guy. I swiftly and gingerly placed the spy book back in its hiding place and inserted the key back into my pocket just as the guy opened the door.
“Hello, Chelsey! I have your hot chocolate.” The fanny pack guy handed me the mug - an ugly green and mustard yellow. This guy had interesting tastes. “I’m sorry it took so long. The water took a long time to heat up.”
“It’s okay,” I said, taking a sip.
“Don’t-” he warned.
I quickly spit out the inflaming hot liquid.
“-drink it.” the guy finished. “It’s really hot.”
“Yeah, I felt it going down my spine!” I said.
The man stared at me awkwardly for a second. “Oh, and Chelsey, here are your pancakes.” He pulled out a plate full of massive pancakes.
I gasped. “That’s a lot of pancakes!” I took the plate and thanked him.
“Anything else you need?” he asked.
I glanced down at my pancakes. “A fork, please.”
“Most certainly.” He pulled out a fork from his pocket and gave it to me. “I am going to go. I will come back and check on you in a little bit. Bye.”
“Bye!”
And then he closed and locked the door.
I prayed for my food and then ate it because I was hungry. As I was eating, I grabbed the spy book and read a little bit. Then I read this line:
Never trust anyone you do not know.
I spit out the pancakes because I absolutely did not know who the
fanny pack guy was. Who knows? Maybe he put poison in pancakes. Or even the hot chocolate! Maybe that was why it took the fanny pack guy “so long” to make the hot chocolate.
So I thought of the only thing I needed to do next: run away!
Chapter Nine: An Unwelcome Guest
I had to get out of this room! I looked around the walls to see if there was anything that I could do to escape. So, I felt against the walls to see if I could feel anything.
I couldn’t feel any sort of lever, but I did hear voices. It sounded like the three men who kidnapped me.
“..word from the boss. He said that she has her in the HQ. So, we are going to run over there and check on her.” I think it was the British guy - or the leader - who said that. I could briefly hear their words. “Clark, you go check on the girl. Otis and I will go to the HQ and go see Kurry.”
“Okay,” I recognized his voice. It was the fanny pack guy. “I’ll go check
on her. Good luck to you two.”
“ ‘Good luck’? What do you mean?” the British guy asked.
“I felt like that was the right thing to say.” Clark said. He was actually the fanny pack guy.
“Okay. Now get on! Check the girl! We don’t want her to escape. Your goal is to check on her every half hour. So keep your eye on the time.”
“When will you get back?” Clark asked.
“I don’t know. Just aim for an hour or so.”
“Got it. Bye.”
“See ya.”
The voices stopped and I knew that the fanny pack guy was going to check on me.
Quickly, I placed the spy book back into its hiding space and sat on the couch when Clark came in.
“Hello, Chelsey!” I could tell he put on his “friendly” smile. I knew now that he really wasn’t nice.
“Hi,” I said. I pretended to eat the now-cold pancakes.
“Do you like the food?”
“Yes, it is delicious.” I bluffed. Then I “took a sip” of my hot chocolate. “The hot cocoa is still hot!” I blew on the beverage to increase my lie.
There was an awkward pause.
“Well, I’m probably going to go. I’ll see you later.” Clark smiled. “I’m glad you like your breakfast. Bye.”
“Bye.”
SLAM!
I waited until I couldn’t hear Clark’s footsteps any longer.
FLIP, Flop, flip, flop, flip, flop, flip, flop, flip.
Quickly I grabbed the spy book and started forming a plan on how to escape.
After about five minutes, I heard the door start to open.
I froze.
I thought that Clark wasn't going to come back for another 25 minutes! I tried to hide the book but it was too late.
The person - who was not Clark - barged into the room.
Chapter Ten: Who is This Person?
A dark figure emerged from the door. They closed the door and looked around the room that I was in.
I couldn’t move.
“Are you looking for something?” I somehow managed to ask.
The figure looked right at me. All I could see were their clear blue eyes. The figure pointed at me. “You, Annabella Kurry.”
Without warning, the figure grabbed me and pulled me out of the door. They dragged me through the hallway and turned corners. We came to a door with an exit sign above and went through it.
Daylight smacked us in the face as its scintillating light burned our eyes.
But the figure kept moving forward. With every step we took, my eyesight became a little bit better. Soon, I realized that we were in New York City.
We turned a corner and then we went into an old-looking, abandoned building. The person took me there and it was pitch black. They turned on the light and it looked like it used to be a restaurant.
Finally, the person turned to me and took off their mask. It was a girl. She had long, blonde hair and lots of freckles.
“Hello, Annabelle. You may be wondering who I am.” she said.
I blinked. “Um, yeah! Who are you?”
“My name is Catalina, but I go by Cat.” she leaned in close to me and said, “I work with your mom. You see, I am a spy.”
“Well, I kind of figured that you were some sort of spy.”
“So, I have brought news for you. I know where your mom is.”
My eyes went wide. “You do?” I couldn’t believe it!
“Yes, I do. That’s why I had to track you down.”
I wanted her to get down to the chase. “Okay, and she is…?”
“All the way in Alaska.”
I gasped. My eyes practically popped open this time. “I am sorry, but WHAT??”
Cat nodded. “Yep.”
“So we need to go there!” My mind was racing.
“Whoa, whoa, hold your horses. We can’t go there right now!” Cat exclaimed.
“Oh, true,” I said.
“So, we need to come up with a plan. Which I already did.” Cat grabbed a rolled up piece of paper from her pocket and set it out on one of the tables that we were sitting at. She unrolled it and revealed writing. It said:
The Plan: Me and Annabelle are going to get tickets to fly to Alaska. I will use my sleuth skills to look for Alexa Kurry. We will then find her and go back to the HQ.
I raised an eyebrow. “That’s the plan? I thought you were a spy.” I was expecting the plan to be more complicated and like a cool spy mission.
Nope.
“I am a spy! I’m a part of the SSA.”
“What’s the-”
“Follow me.” Cat led me toward a door that said, “Do not enter.”
I eyed the sign on the door suspiciously. “We aren’t supposed to go in there, are we?”
“SHHH!” Cat opened the door, took a step, and fell.
Within seconds, the girl spy disappeared.
Chapter Eleven: The HQ
“CAT! CAT!” I yelled.
There was no answer.
I felt like I was in the same situation as when I was frantically looking for my mom. This was just as big of a shock.
I closed my eyes and then jumped. I felt like it took me forever to get to the bottom. I landed in soft foam blocks.
“Ugh,” My head was spinning and I was quite dizzy. Then, I heard Cat’s voice.
“This is the HQ.” She smiled.
“This is wicked awesome!” I exclaimed.
“Pretty cool, right?”
“Um, YES!” I said. “Is this where you work?”
Cat giggled slightly. “Yes. In fact, this is where I live.”
I was confused. “Wait, what?"
