When Jo was nine, she went to the school, Tutshill Primary.
At Tutshill, the teachers arranged the seats by smartness.
Jo took a fractions test and failed and had to sit on the
''bad'' side of the room. Jo was not sad to leave Tutshill behind to go to a
different school, Wyedean Comprehensive.
At eleven years old, Jo went to the school, Wyedean Comprehensive.
While Jo was at Wyedean, a tough girl picked a fight with her. Jo stood
up to the girl and became famous throughout the school for it.
Meanwhile, at Jo's house, her life changed forever. Her mother had
gotten the disease called Multiple Sclerosis. Jo was especially sad since
she relied on her mother a lot, due to the fact that her father was always
at work and she hardly ever saw him.
However, Jo's school life got better when she was elected Head Girl in
her last year at Wyedean Comprehensive.

writing.

When Jo graduated from the University of Exeter in 1987,
she worked as a secretary at Amnesty International and
moved to Clapham, a neighborhood in South London.

One weekend, Jo took a trip to Manchester to look at flats, or
apartments. After looking at the flats, Jo rode a train all the way back
to London. Jo stared out of the window, thinking of nothing.
Suddenly, an image of a boy popped into Jo's head. She reached into
her bag for a pen but didn't find one and went back to staring out the
window.Soon, Jo thought more about the boy. He was a wizard, but
he didn't know it. Jo thought about the boy's wizard and witch
friends. There were a best friend named Ron and a clever girl named
Hermione.
When Jo got home, she found a pen and notebook and wrote the
boy's name at the top. His name was Harry Potter!

Soon after Jo got the great idea of Harry Potter her
happiness plummeted down to sadness. Her mother
had died. Anne had been sick for a very long time,
yet neither Jo, nor her sister, nor her father,
believed that she would die. But now, the thing that
had been too terrible to believe had happened.

To lift her spirits, Jo decided to teach English in Oporto, Portugal. While Jo was there,
she met a journalist named Jorge Arantes. She fell in love with him and they got
married in 1992. A year later, Jo had a baby named Jessica. She loved her new baby
but her marriage was not a happy one. So Jo left Portugal and Jorge, only bringing
Jessica and the Harry Potter chapters back home.

Jo and baby Jessica went to live in Edinburgh, Scotland. Di, Jo's sister, was
already living there with her husband. More than anything Jo wanted to finish her
book. Whenever Jessica fell asleep, Jo would write as much and as fast as she
could. She would also go to Di's husband's cafe, Nicolson's Cafe. There, Jo could
write and write and then take a sip of her cooled coffee. Jo also wrote in other
cafes and coffee shops such as the Elephant House Cafe. But at Nicolson's Jo
could sit and write for hours at a time.
