has quickly become one of the most enjoyable students to be
around, as he is full of knowledge and is eager to learn. My
mentor teacher shared with me that this student was placed
on medication to help with his attention and behavior, but his
mother didn't want to continue treating him with this method.
The student's mother felt that the school could do more to
improve his learning. The purpose of this story is to share
some of the great techniques that my mentor teacher has
implemented into her classroom to assist her student. I
Hope it helps all of you in your future classroom!

his teacher did to help Hayden succeed in 1st
grade.

Hi! My name is Hayden. I have lots and lots of
energy! Its hard for me to pay attention
sometimes. My teacher, Ms. O, has found fun
ways to calm me down, so I can learn.

I love to work in a group. When I'm at my
table I sit on a bumpy cushion, which uses my
balance to sit still. Ms. O also tied a stretchy
cord to my chair leg, so I can pull on it if my
hands are feeling crazy.

If it's too hard to stay focused at the table, I also
have my own stand up desk. Across the legs is
another stretchy cord, which I can kick with my
feet.

When it's time to learn during carpet time, I get
my own special square. It's made of red tape
and it's behind the rest of the students. Here, I
can touch or distract anyone.

When I'm sitting in my square, I like to play with
silly putty. I can stretch it or roll it, while
listening to Ms.O. Sometimes it gets taken
away, when I cant hold it the right way.

I know it's important to raise my hand if I want
to speak. I sometimes forget and Ms. O does a
good job reminding me to do it.
