Xing Yu, the Queen of Unicorn Island, stood in her yard and called her daughter, “Amber, suppertime!” Strangely, Amber did not gallop home.
So, Xing Yu summoned a fairy, “Could you find Amber please?”
The summer fairy, Summer, answered, “It will take a few minutes because I must go fetch my tools.” Summer flew off and the Queen, reassured, sat at her table, and started to eat supper.
On the table were the unicorn’s favorite food, apples, and sky berries. The table was piled high in blues, greens, and reds.
Amber dashed into the dining room. Her mother gawked at her and said, “Amber, where were you? Why are you so dirty? Never mind, go have a shower. We can talk about it when you are clean. Now go!”
“Ok.” Amber rushed through her shower excitedly because she had something to tell her mother.
While she was showering, Summer flew in and hovered before the Queen. Breaking into a sweat, Summer worriedly told Xing Yu, “I can’t find Amber. I don’t know where she is!”
The Queen glanced at Summer kindly and answered, “Don’t worry! Amber is back and in the shower. Take a seat and join me while we wait for her.”
What no one knew was that Amber was preparing a surprise for them. She leaped into the room shouting, “Suppertime!” Everyone was startled.
Amber burst into laughter and sat down.
Xing Yu looked at her elated daughter and asked, “What is it that you wanted to tell me? Why are you so excited?”
Amber, about to explode with her secret, finally told her mom, “I met a dragon in the forest. She’s lost, mom! We have to help her find her way home. She’s friendly and her name is Violet. Can I go get her? Pleeeeeaaaaaaase?” She pleaded.
Summer was intrigued, “What kind of dragon is Violet? Is she a summer dragon? If she is, she will be my friend too.”
Amber answered, “We need to ask Violet what kind of dragon she is because I don’t know. How would you feel if she were a winter dragon?”
Summer frowned, “I would be cold and grumpy.”
Xing Yu interrupted, “It does not matter. It is time to eat now. And then we need to sleep if we are going to help Violet tomorrow.”
Amber reassured Summer, “Don’t worry, you will like her.”
The next day, Amber woke before the sun. She was so excited, she trotted to Summer’s sunflower and shook her awake. “Come on! Get up! It’s time to go, sleepy Lazybones!”
Summer yawned crankily, she liked to wake up slowly and getting pushed out of her sunflower was not fun. Amber was already on her way to her mom’s room. Suddenly, the Queen felt her bed tremble under Amber’s weight as she slept peacefully, “What is so heeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaavy?”
“Mom! Mom! Wake up! It’s time to go find Violet!” Amber said enthusiastically.
“Amber, what are you doing? It’s too early. Go back to bed. We’ll go when the sun is up and then we will be able to see her,” her mom reprimanded crossly.
Amber returned to her bed. “I’m awake now. I can’t go back to sleep,” she muttered grouchily.
A few minutes later, Summer woke up with the rising sun. She left her sunflower and flew to Amber’s room. Already awake, Amber was quietly reading a book waiting for time to pass until she could see Violet.
Summer said, “Let’s go find Violet.”
“Wait! I’m starving! Let’s eat breakfast first,” replied Amber.
Summer was hungry too, “Race you to the dining room. Last one there is a rotten egg.” She flew as fast as she could while Amber galloped next to her.
Amber was already sitting at the table when Summer flew in. “You’re a rotten egg,” she told her.
“It’s not fair,” Summer retorted, “Your legs are strong and long. You can go very fast.”
Amber smiled and tapped the seat next to her, “Come and sit! Don’t worry, let’s eat.” Summer happily joined Amber.
As Xing Yu walked into the dining room, Amber stood up and exclaimed, “Mom is here! Time to go!”
The Queen sat down, looked at her daughter, and told her, “What’s going on, Amber? You woke me up very early and now you won’t let me eat! Sit down and wait. Patience is a virtue.”
Amber sat down and waited. She didn’t want her mom to become angry and change her mind, but she still encouraged the Queen to eat quickly.
When she finished eating, they were ready to go, “Ok! Let’s go meet the dragon.”
Summer called the Fairy Guards, and ordered, “We don’t know where we are going. Stay in front and keep your eyes open.”
Amber was impatient and trotting around the Queen, “Ok! Ok! Violet is waiting, let’s just go already!”
They left the castle and cantered down the path to the forest. As they walked, they saw many cyclamens. There were many shades of pink and purple.
“Look! This one is yellow,” Amber told Xing Yu.
She answered, “There must be magic nearby because cyclamens only turn yellow when they are touched by magic.”
Summer, who had been flying ahead, came back and announced, “There is a bed of violets in the clearing.”
