winter home!

Fall was ending and it was getting colder and
colder outside. Libby was a larvae, an
immature insect who will soon turn into an
adult. She and her bug friends needed a way
to stay warm in the winter.
All the bugs grabbed their belongings and
started moving to their new winter homes.

Along the way, Libby got separated from her
friends. She was all alone. This was her very
first winter and she did not know where to go.

All of a sudden, Libby heard a noise in the sky.
She looked up and saw her friend Mona the
Monarch Butterfly heading south.
“Hey Mona, wait for me!," said Libby. "I want
to go south with you!”
“No silly, you are a larvae and can’t fly! My
other Monarch friends and I are heading to
Mexico where we can stay warm! See you in
the spring!” and with that Mona flew away.

Libby walked and walked until she came upon
some eggs. She recognized these eggs. They
belonged to her friend Penny the Praying
Mantis. Penny had wanted to lay her eggs here
so that they could survive winter and hatch in
the spring.
Libby sat with the eggs and tried talking to
them but they would not talk back. And they
would not let her inside their warm shells!
“You guys are boring," said Libby, "I’m going
to find some other people to spend winter
with!”

Libby continued on her journey. She kept on
walking when suddenly, she slipped on some
ice. She landed on her stomach and looked
down into the icy pond. There she saw Dana
the Dragonfly nymph! A nymph is a young
form of an insect.

“Hey Dana what are you doing down there?”
asked Libby.
“We nymphs like to live in waters of ponds,
mostly beneath the ice. Down here we can eat
and eat so that we will grow strong. This way
we will emerge as adults once spring hits!”
Libby did not think that living under all that
cold ice sounded like a fun way to spend her
winter so she said goodbye and kept walking.
