This story is dedicated to my first-graders from beautifully different families and cultures who are to live their authentic selves.

Hi! I am Daniela. These are my friends, Mikey and Layla! We are in the same first-grade class but we come from families that look different. We also have different traditions and cultures!

Culture is the way a group of people lives. This includes food, clothes, music, language, and knowledge.

These are my moms and my dog, Pedro! My mom's families originate from Puerto Rico. We speak both Spanish and English at home.

Puerto Rico a small Caribbean country below the United States. It is located in the red box on this map.

Puerto Rican culture is a mix of Spanish and African culture! Music and dance includes "Bomba" which uses maracas, cuá (two wooden sticks), and the bomba barrel, which is a large drum played with the hands!

There are so many yummy Puerto Rican foods! This dish is called Arroz con Gandules. It is made of yellow rice, pigeon peas (gandules), and pork. It is often enjoyed during the Puertorriqueño holiday season.

These are my parents! My dad's family originates from Northern Europe and my mom's family originates from Nigeria, in Western Africa. We love going to the beach on the weekends!

There are over 500 languages spoken in Nigeria! Religion is also a big part of Nigeria. The two main religions in Nigeria are Islam and Christianity! There is amazing food and folk music.

One of Nigeria's most famous meals is called Jollof Rice. It is made rice, tomato broth, and spices! Nigeria and Ghana, another African country, often have friendly debates about whose Jollof Rice is better!
