"Jack, hard times have fallen upon us and I'm afraid we have to move you to
public school." Jack's mom said over dinner that night. A recent hardship due to
a problem with the school they worked at had cost them their jobs that week.
Jack pushes his plate forward and angrily storms off to his room.
"Why does our family have to be so poor?" Jack screamed into his pillow. "It's
not fair, everyone else can afford it!" He continued on yelling until his mom
quietly opened the door and came into his room. "We know its not easy Jack,
but if you want to keep all of the things we already have, you will have to go to
public school. It won't be that bad, your old friend Julian will be there." Jack
was less than thrilled to learn that Julian would be at his "new" school. After all,
the fiasco that had happened two years ago in fifth grade could surely present
itself again. Jack's mother left the room to let Jack process over all of this new
information, and to sleep on it.
The next morning, Jack woke to the sound of the doorbell. He approached the
door, still brooding over last nights discovery. He throws open the door to find
August at his doorstep. Jack exclaims angrily,"What do you want?" August was
a little taken back by his tone, and says,"Is this a bad time?" Jack calmed down
and proclaims,"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be rude to you. It's just that, hard
times have hit..." Jack gets teary eyed, and pardons himself from the
conversation at hand.

"Wake up Jack!" his mother screams to him as a wake up call. "Today is the first day of
school, and I would suggest that you start getting ready." Jack climbs out of bed and puts a
shirt on. "How big is Davis Junior High?" asked Jack. "Well, it's big enough to fit all of the
kids, so it isn't small." replies Jack's mom.
Jack and his brother, Jamie, jumped in to his mother's car while his mom was finishing
breakfast. They rolled up to Davis Junior High Jack saw many new faces, but he recognized
one out of all the students. It was Julian. As Jack got out of the car his mom yelled, "Have a
nice day sweetie." Jack suddenly turns around and yells back,"Stop calling me that I'm not
Jamie!"
Unfortunately their exchange had caught the attention of Julian and other bystanders. A
mischievous grin stretched across Julian's face as he came over to where he was standing.
"what are you doing here Jack" Julian said mockingly. "Finally get tired of all of those geeks
at Beecher prep? Come with me, I have some friends I want you to meet."
After the last bell, Jack went out to his mom's car. "How was school today Jack? I saw those
kids out front you were talking to, I'm glad you are making friends so early." "They're okay"
Jack said, "But not like August or Amos" Jack didn't want to tell his mom about Julian,
because Julian was still not over what had happened their fifth grade year. "To make up for
it, I invited August over for dinner, and I want you to tell him about your new school" Jacks
mom said. "He should at least know that you aren't going to school at Beecher Prep
anymore."
