We’ve all heard the story
of Sleeping Beauty but,
have you heard the story
of Cancer Beauty,
Kelsey? Kelsey was an
ordinary girl until she
found out something
terrifying.

I woke up on a sunny Wednesday just like any other day. I
brushed my long brown hair, brushed my teeth, put on
jeans with my barrel racing belt, my purple genuine cowgirl
shirt, and cowgirl boots so I can go check on the horses and
other animals before I go to school like I do every morning.
But, I started to feel some pain in my neck, but hey, it’s
probably nothing, right? But, I ignore it and go outside and
of course the first horses to come up to me are my two
horses Cash, a 9 year old buckskin quarter horse and
Spartan, a 10 year old black quarter horse. I groomed them
quick, jumped in my truck that I just got for my sixteenth
birthday, and drove to school. When I get to school I run
into my best friend, Amber. We have been best friends since
kindergarten.

“Hey, Amber,” I stated.
“Hey, Kelsey did you hear?” she
questioned as we walked in to
biology.
“Hear what?” I answered.
“You know Sam from our History
class?” she asked.
“Yeah, “I started, “What about
him?”.
“He has cancer and has to get a
tumor removed,” she stated.

“Cancer?” I whispered. The bell rang and class
started. After biology I started to feel more pain
in my neck, but I ignored it again. As I was
walking to English I saw a sign for a free psychic
reading. I decided to go since there was no line
and I had time to spare. I walked in and the
room was dark, had one small round table, and
had a crystal ball in the center of the table. Okay,
this has to be a joke, I thought, but I wanted to
get the reading. I walked over to the small table
and sat down across from a middle aged woman
with blues eyes and blonde hair, who I’m
guessing is the psychic.

“Hello child,” she starts, “What is your name?”
“Hi, I’m Kelsey,” I state.
“Why do you come for a reading?” she
questions.
“Um,” I stutter, “I just want to know if this
kid in our grade, Sam, is going to be okay
because he has cancer and just my future in
general”.
“Okay, let’s begin” she added, “first put your
hands palms up on the table”. When she
started to look at my hands she got this
strange look in her eyes.

“What?” I questioned.
“Sam, will be fine, but my dear child, you have cancer
as well.” She answered.
“No! No! That can’t be,” I yell and storm out of the
room. My neck hurts even more so I leave school and
go to the hospital. When I arrive they get me right into
the MRI. When I’m out they tell me I will have to wait
twenty-four hours for the results.

Then next day I get a call from the hospital
and they tell me I have a type of cancer called
thyroid cancer that moved into my lungs. I
drop my phone on the floor in shock. Cancer!
How could I have cancer? I am a healthy
person. They also told me I have to go to
some support group in this one place I didn’t
even know existed. It is every Thursday at
4:30, so that means I get to go today. I take a
sick day because I don’t feel like going to
school or do anything, so I took a nap.

When I woke up it was 4:00 so I got in my car
and drove to support group. When I got there I
followed this group of kids down some stairs
into a basement of a hospital. Wow, how
convenient. I went and sat down and saw this
talk, hot, guy staring at me. He has brown hair
and brown eyes; he is wearing a black t-shirt,
with a brown leather jacket, jeans, and tennis
shoes. Turns out we had to actually have to
speak at this thing, why I don’t know. They
started with the guy that was staring at me.

“My name is Luke,” he
started, “I’m sixteen years
old. I had a touch of
osteosarcoma and I’ve been
cancer free for about 6
months”. Then some other
kids talked and then it was
my turn.

“Um… my name is Kelsey,” I
started, “I’m sixteen years old.
I just found out today that I
have thyroid cancer that moved
into my lungs”. Luke was
staring at me the whole time I
was talking and the rest of
support group. After it was
over, I went towards the doors
when someone grabbed my
arm. I spun around and it was
Luke.

“Hey, Kelsey right?” he spoke.
“Yeah,” I stated.
“Do you want to go see a movie with me?” he
questioned.
“Um, sure”, I stuttered.
“Okay, let’s go,” says Luke. We walked to the movie
theatre since it’s only two blocks away. When we get
there we go see Soul Surfer. After the movie I get a call
from the hospital saying they want to put me on a med
called Caprelsa that “helps” with the cancer. Luke gives
me his number and we go our separate ways.
