It was Marie's bedtime, and her mother was 

reading hers, and Marie's favorite mystery 

chapter book- Nancy Drew. Marie's absolute 

favorite time was story time. 

"Mom?" said Marie.

"Yes, dear?" replied her mom.

"How did you learn to read so well?"

"Believe it or not I used to be a little girl just 

like you listening to my mother read to me. I 

remember wanting to read myself and that is 

where it all began....."

"It all started on an island off the coast of 

South America.."

"Wow! Really?," asked Marie with excitement 

in her eyes.

"No," replied her mother as she chuckled,"I 

grew up in Sioux Falls, SD."

"I went to school and played sports. I loved to 

play with my sister, Mikaela, as we played 

house and dress up. I always have had an 

imagination."

"I would read stories like Little House on the 

Prairie and want to travel back in time and 

play jokes on Nellie, and help Pa with chores. I 

would sit at night and read what adventures I 

was going to act out the next day. Books are a 

way to travel to a different world and learn 

about the past and present."

"When I got a little older something terrible 

happened. I lost my love for reading. It was no 

longer cool to read, but it was to play sports 

and hang out with friends. My friends liked to 

go shopping and watch movies. I had missed 

reading and would go to library sometimes, 

but it wasn't the same."

"O no!" gasped Marie.

"That is so sad. Didn't you miss reading about 

the adventures and mysteries of Nancy Drew?"

"Yes, but I had lost my desire for it because I 

was distracted by other things," said mother.
