Vincent was lying down on his bed. He was really bored.
He was holding his pet rock, Harold.
Vincent made him when he was only six and they've been best friends ever since.
Hole
- Mum, can I go outside? - Vincent asked.
- Okay. - said Mary, his mother. - But watch out, there's a huge hole outside.
- Why?
- The neighbore is making a well, don't fall in it.
- I won't. - Vincent left the house along with Harold.
The town was bland, the houses were bland, the grass was bland, everything was just so bland.
There was nothing to do.
All his friends flew abroad for Summer, so he was very bored. Now he was just staring down that hole.
It didn't seem too deep.
Vincent took a rock and threw it in.
He looked at Harold.
- God, I wish you could speak. - said Vincent.
He heard a voice.
" Jump in " " Jump in "
It was coming from the hole.
Vince looked at it in fear.
- You heard that too, right? - he looked at his rock.
- Vincent Andrew Taylor! - his mom shouted from the window. - Get away from that hole this instant!
The poor boy couldn't sleep at night.
He kept on hearing those voices.
He finally managed to fall asleep, but when he woke up he wasn't on his bed.
Dream
Confused, Vincent looked around.
He was lying down under a tree, with Harold beside him.
After a couple of seconds of trying to process what has happened Vincent got up and said:
" Ah, this is just a dream. " - he cleaned the dust off his clothes. - " A lucid dream. "
Everything seemed real.
He felt nice.
There was a lake beside the tree and the sun was shining. He felt warm inside.
He looked to the right.
There he saw a village, that looked a bit similar to his.
- Well, Harold. Let's go meet the town.
That great feeling started dissapearing as he walked through the village.
Everything was so old and dirty, everyone seemed sad.
Vincent saw a boy sitting down on the bench and decided to walk up to him.
- Hi. - he said. - I'm Vincent, and you?
The boy looked at Vincent.
Vincent got a closer look at the boy and realised he had pointy ears.
- My name is Gus. - said the boy. - Why do you look so happy?
- Why do you look so sad? - Vincent sat down next to him.
- I dont know. - Gus looked down. - ...Is that a rockt?
- He's my rock. His name is Harold.
- ...He's very cute.
- No he's not, he's handsome....Are you an elf?
Gus lifted his head up and looked at Vince.
- Not really...Why don't you look like the other elves? Everyone else is sad and grumpy, but you're not.
- I'm not an elf, I'm human.
- What? But you have pointy ears.
- No I don't.
Gus took out a small packaging from his pocket, opened it and took out some round glasses.
- Check it out. - he said bringing the glasses up infront of Vince's face. - Your reflection.
God, he really did have pointy ears.
- Wow...you're right. - said Vincent.
- Are you having and identity crisis? - Gus asked.
Vincent ignored that question.
- Why is this place so gloomy? - he asked.
- It's always been like this, there's nothing we can do about it. I'll probobaly be sad forever.
- Not if you get out of this place and find a happier town to live in.
- What are you saying?
- I say we run away, this place is awfull.
- It's not that bad. I'd never run away, that's not what a good child would do!
- Good kids are boring! You have to let go of things that make you depressed, such as this town.
-...Besides...Who's there to stop you?
Gus was opened his mouth to answer, but a yell interrupted him.
Everyone in town started panicking.
- What's going on? - Vincent asked
- The Vrah is coming!
- The what?
- Follow me. - Gus took Vince's hand and they hid behind a house.
- Don't look. - said Gus. - No matter what you hear.
Screams and snarls came from behind the house.
It was quite scary, Vincent was too scared to speak.
He didn't know if he could. Would that thing out there hear him? The sounds stopped after less than three minutes.
- Okay, we're safe now. - said Gus. - Let's go.
- What was that?!
- The Vrah, I already told you.
- But what is the Vrah? What did it do?
All the people, who were actually elves got back to whatever they were doing.
- He's this kind of...monster? Mutant?
- And that's normal?
- He comes every now and then. He doesn't do too much, he just steals food and sometimes demolishes houses or wagons. We hide because legend sais looking him into the eyes will release some sort of curse, so we're just trying to stay safe. Nobody really knows where he comes from, but it seems that this village is his favorite place to vandalise.
- That's just another reason why you should escape.
This was just a dream after all, why not make it a fun adventure with some lil dude who doesn't want to tell me what's his species.
It was getting dark.
- You'll have to stay at my place, I geuss. - said Gus.
- Do I need to pay?
- No, it's fine. Come with me.
Molly
It was now night, everything seemed real.
Gus and Vincent were sleeping in the same room.
He didn't know much about Gus, but he seemed harmless. Vincent couldn't sleep. He always had trouble sleeping. All the sounds and feelings seemed so real.
He was confused. The moon was very bright so so was the room.Vincent looked at Gus. He was sleeping peacfully. Vincent looked at the window and decided to open it as the night was peacful. It was very bright. The moon was huge, but it seemed like it was day light falling down on the boy's face. He looked it and sighed. This was the perfect moment for some adventure. He jumped off the bed and ran to Gus.
- Gus. - he said. - We're going.
- What? - Gus woke up. - What's wrong?
- We're leaving.
- Where to?
- Away from this place.
- But The Vrah could be on the loose.
- I checked, he isn't. And your parents aren't here to stop you...Where are your parents?
- Never met them. - Gus got out of bed.
- Oh...sorry.
- Don't sweat it. - said Gus. - There are many kids like me in this world. Especially in this village, there's like five orphan elves.
So Gus wasn't the only child who lived by his self in this droppingshole. Vincent didn't know how to handle situations like these, so he just took Gus's hand and took him downstairs.
- Shouldn't we at least pack?
- Nah. - said Vincent opening the door.
In front of them stood a unicorn.
A glamorous unicorn, white fur and a pink mane.
- Where are you kids going? - the unicorn asked in a deep voice.
- W-We're sorry, Commander Molly! - Gus bowed. - We'll head back!
Gus took Vincent's hand and quickly turned to the door.
- No, wait. - said Molly.
Gus turned around nervously.
- Yes?
- Who's that new face? - The unicorn looked at Vincent.
- My name is Vincent.
- Surname?
- Taylor.
Molly narrowed his eyes.
- You two, come with me. - he said.
Vincent and Gus exchanged looks and went after the unicorn.
They hid behind a tree and Molly started talking.
- Take this. - he handed a map and a letter to Gus. - I'm taking you two away from this place.
- YESSSS. - said Vincent.
- It's dangerous. - said Molly.
- Then it's even better!
-...Anyway...Have you ever heard of Wizard Croak?
- No, Commander Molly. - said Gus.
- As it should be. And just call me Molly, we're gonna spend a lot of time together, Gus.
- How do you know my name?
- I'll tell you later. Follow me.
They were walking through the forest.
It wasn't like a human forest.
It was more turquoise, rather than green.
It was messy and similar to a wetland or jungle.
The forest
- Stay behind me. - said Molly. - There might be quicksand here.
- Are you gonna explain what's happening? - Gus asked.
- Not yet. - said Molly.
- Isn't this illegal, though? It's basically like kidnapping. - said Vincent.
- This is a exception. I was told to do this.
- Wait, so we're like wanted by the Ruler or something? - Gus asked.
- Sort of. - said Molly. - But don't be scared, I'll explain everything when we get to Croak.
Thirty minutes passed.
- Are we there yet? - asked Vincent.
- Almost.
- It's terribly dark in here. - said Gus. - I'm a bit scared.
- Dark? It's hella bright. - said Vincent.
Molly stopped walking and turned around.
- Say that again.
-...It's...bright...?
The unicorn narowed his eyes once again, nodded and continued walking.
Gus looked at Vincent, Vincent looked at Gus.
They both shrugged.
