What engineers do........3
Aerospace engineers.....5
How to become one......7

My mom flies planes. She loves
to fly. She loves it so much that
she became an aerospace
engineer.
Engineers design and build all
the things we use every day. They
design and build cars, buildings,
televisions...and planes. They take
ideas about how to make life
better and figure out how to make
those ideas work.

Engineers specialize in different areas. Some are
electrical engineers who might design a power
station. A structural engineer might design a
bridge. Aerospace engineers, like my mom, work
on anything that flies through the air or even in
space. There are lots of different kinds of
engineers.
Engineers work in different places, too. Some
work in labs and others work outside. Some build
models of their work and work on computers to
see how their designs looks and works. Their job
is never boring.

The Wright Brothers were aerospace
engineers. They built the first plane that
flew under its own power. The first flight at
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina lasted 12
seconds and went 120 feet.
Nobody knew much about flying back
then so the Wright Brothers used a wind
tunnel to test their wing designs. My mom
uses a wind tunnel to test
her designs just like they
did. Her wind tunnel is a
lot more complicated.

Today aerospace engineers work on everything
from the smallest planes to the
biggest rockets. They have to make
sure that their designs work the way
they are supposed to and that they are
safe. Millions of people fly on planes every
day! It's important that planes are safe so aerospace
engineers are very careful.
Before I was born, my mom worked for
NASA and helped design the space
shuttle. She always wanted to be an
astronaut but had to settle for helping
them get into space. Aerospace engineers
work on satellites, too

My mom always liked airplanes. When she was little
she flew kites and built model planes. She decided to
learn to fly and got her pilot certificate before she got
her driver's license! Flying was the most important
thing for her.
In school she studied hard and took lots of math
and science courses. Those courses are important for
any kind of engineering career. Engineers use math
and science in their jobs everyday.

Mom graduated from high
school and went to a college
that had an aerospace
engineering program. There
were lots of other students who
wanted to be engineers but not many of them were
women like my mom. She said some of them didn't
think women were smart enough to be engineers.
Mom studied REALLY hard. When she graduated, she
had the highest grades in her class. I guess she
showed them. She taught me that anyone can be
whatever they want to be if they love it and want to
work hard. I want to be an engineer just like my mom.
