One-point perspective
Grades 6-8
Standard 8 2PR

One-point perspective is an easy way to make any object or space look more realistic. Making something appear three-dimensional on a two-dimensional surface can be hard, but with these tips and tricks, you will become a pro.
For the first exercise, put a dot in the center of the page and draw various shapes around it. Then, with a ruler, lightly trace lines from the edges of the shapes to the dot. You can either let your shapes go all the way to the dot or you can shorten them, like shown in the picture.

The image on the right is Van Gogh's Bedroom in Aries.
The red line at the top of the page is the horizon line. The horizon line is always at eye level.
The blue lines radiating from the red line are called orthogonal lines. These lines help to maintain perspective in a drawing or painting.
The dot that all the blue lines lead to is called the vanishing point. The vanishing point is the furthest point from the viewer.
This step-by-step shows how to use the vanishing point, horizon line, and orthogonal lines to create a city scape.
Here is another example of one-point perspective but in an interior space.
