The first Appaloosa is the first horse breed
to be known by man. In 1975 governor
Cecil Andrus signed the bill and made it
official that the Appaloosa is the state
horse. The Appaloosa has black spots on
its back.



The Hagerman horse was chosen as our state
fossil in 1988. They lived in IDAHO over 3 million
years ago. They lived long before the Appaloosa.
It is smaller than an average horse.




Under the Cutthroat trouts jaw they have a
orange or red slash-like line. This line makes it
look like a cut in the throat. It became are
state fish in 1990. The fish has always lived in
Idaho.



The monarch butterfly is the state insect. The
edge of the wings are black. It has orange
wings with black fains. When they have there
baby there parents fly away and die. They
don't like the cold They can fly up to 2,000
miles on there trip south. They can travel as
fast as 33 miles per hour.



The star garnet was adopted in 1967. The only
place they can be found is Idaho. They are
polished. When they are polished they have a
star in the middle.



In 1989 the legislature choose square dance as
the American folk dance of Idaho. The square
dance takes 8 people. Americans have been
doing the square dance since 1651.



The male bluebird is the brightest. They eat
wild fruits and berries. They like birdhouses
with little holes for doors. The mountain
bluebird usually lives 5,000 feet. They
sometimes flies to mexico. The bluebird is a
sign of happiness.
