“Thud, thud, thud” my herd galloped along. I 

am Stripes, I am a zebra. There are roughly a 

few hundred zebra’s in my herd. I feel safe in 

my herd because our stripes make it hard for 

predators to target a single zebra. My dad is 

leader of the herd. Our herd lives in the 

Savanna and it is summer, the dry season. The 

dry season is the longest and water is very 

scarce. We are trying to find a home with 

enough food and water to survive, and that is 

easier said than done.

We have been traveling for three weeks now, 

yet we have not found a suitable place to live. 

My father is worried. I had been born in winter 

and many zebra’s didn’t make it including my 

mother. It was my dads first summer without 

my mom and I couldn’t help him because it 

was my first dry season actually being alive. 

Dust began to gather in my eyes. It really 

burned and suddenly, I was blinded! I tried to 

yell to my herd but nobody could hear me. 

After a minute or two the rest of my herd 

passed, and it became silent.

“Help!   Help!   Can anybody hear me?” I pleaded. 

The wind whispered across the field as if it was 

telling a secret. “Anybody!” I yelled. I lay down 

because I knew it was hopeless. About an hour 

later I heard a voice say “you’re not going to get 

to your herd like that.” I was very surprised. 

“How did you know that I got separated from my 

herd?” I ask. “Well it’s not every day you see a 

zebra your age away from their herd.” I stood 

up. “I am dust, I am an elephant and I am going 

to help you find your herd.” We began to walk 

together.
