Activity: "Pizza Crust"
- Each student will be given a blank piece of "pizza crust" paper. They must divide the pizza into a certain number of pieces, such as 4 or 6. Then, they will use materials to create "toppings" for their pizza. (Explain that each slice of their pizza has to be different from the other slices). Some slices can have the same toppings, but each slice must be different. When they are done making their pizza, they can write down what fraction of the pizza has a certain topping. They must fill out a chart for: the topping name, the materials they used to make the topping, the fraction of the topping, and a picture of the topping.

It was a beautiful day in the forest. Bird called all of the forest animals together for an important meeting.








"Attention Everyone!" shouted Bird. "Tomorrow is Baxter Bear's 16th birthday, and I would like your help throwing him a big birthday bash! We each need to bring one food item so there is enough for everyone to eat."
Bird told them to meet back at the same spot the next day, at 10 am, so they could set out the food and decorations for the party.



"I am bringing turkey sandwiches," grunted Moose.

"I'll bring cherry pie!" shouted Opossum.
"Oooo I can make some scrumptious pizza!" hooted Owl.
"I will bring my famous chocolate cake," said Porkie.
The animals briefly discussed what they would bring to the party and set off to prepare!



Meanwhile, Baxter Bear was hibernating in his cozy cabin. He would not wake up until the next day, just in time for the birthday bash!



















The animals scurried to find ingredients for their food items at the grocery store.

Once they had everything they needed, they headed to Porkie's kitchens to bake, cook, and prep the food.

















After a long day of hard work, the animals went home to get ready for bed. Every animal fell fast asleep. They could not wait for tomorrow!













They met up at 10 am, just as they had planned. While setting out the food for Baxter Bear's birthday, they encountered a problem. They forgot to divide their food items up! Now, they had to work together to see how much food they would need for everyone (including Baxter). They had to work FAST!
They started with the cherry pie that Opossum made. Unfortunately, he had already cut it into 4 pieces. That would not be enough for 8 people. 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4= 4.
"What can we do to divide the pie into 8 pieces?" asked Opossum.
"I know!" said Turtle, "We can take each fourth and divide it in half. That would give us 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 which equals 8 whole pieces!"
"Great job turtle!" exclaimed Opossum. Everyone cheered!









Next up were Moose's turkey sandwiches. He made three.
"How are we supposed to divide up 3 sandwiches for 8 people?" he groaned.
"Maybe we could cut each one in half!" suggested Porkie.
"But, 1/2+ 1/2+ 1/2+ 1/2 + 1/2+ 1/2 is only 6 pieces. That is not enough," said Moose. "Hmm," Moose thought, "What if we cut them into thirds?"
"1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 is nine pieces. That is one too many." said Bird.
"Well, it is okay to have one left over. Maybe one of us will still be hungry." said Moose.
"I guess that is true," agreed Bird. So, the animals cut the sandwiches into thirds.








Porkie placed her famous chocolate cake on the table. "I have not cut it yet," she said. "I don't know if there will be enough. I should have made two," she sighed.
"Don't worry Porkie! We can cut it into eighths and each person can have one slice!" said Raccoon. "Remember 1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8 +1/8+ 1/8 = 8 whole pieces. "We just have to make sure each piece is equal."
"Hand me the cake cutter, I got this!" shouted Owl.
He cut the cake into 8 precise slices.
