Who was Ibn Battuta?
Ibn Battuta was born February 25, 1304 in Tangier, Morocco which is located in Northern Africa. Not much is known about his early life and childhood but much of his family were judges and legal scholars so he had a very good education. He had no children and did not marry. He had died around 1369.
He started traveling to make his holy pilgrimage to Mecca, as it is a part of the Muslim religion. His parents had most likely commissioned him to the beginning of his travels as they were very wealthy and Battuta wanted to make his pilgrimage. He left for Mecca in 1325 and was 21 years old at the time. After visiting Mecca, he realized he had a passion for travel and decided to keep on traveling across the Islamic world.

These are the routes that Ibn Battuta made over the course of 30 years.
Battuta had adventured a series of routes while traveling. When leaving for Mecca, he had joined a caravan of about 20,000 people that traveled across seas, mountains, deserts, by land. He visited Northern Africa, Palestine, Syria and Egypt. When he had reached Cairo, Egypt, he then set out for Upper Egypt and the Red Sea.
Sooner heading into Syria. On his journey's, he recorded what he saw and where he was traveling. When he had entered Syria, Battuta had then joined another caravan traveling to Mecca. This journey took a total of 1.5 years to complete. He had studied for several months in Mecca and had improved his education. While staying in Mecca, he had realized he had grown a passion for travel in 1326.
