Chapter One
''Mom, I'm going to the park,'' Mary's daughter, Ida, told her.
''All right, Ida,'' Mary said absentmindedly. She was making bread.
As soon as I da left the little hut, Mary's husband came in, his eyes filled with worry.
''They say war is surrounding the island.''
''Shh...'' Mary hushed him and looked around anxiously to see if any of her five children were around.
It appeared the children had all scattered, so Mary assumed they were safe.
She turned to John.
''How close is the war?'' she asked, almost trembling.
John met her eyes. ''I'm sorry, Mary. We're going to have to-''
''No!'' Mary cried out. ''I've so longed to stay here and spread the gospel! Oh, John, there MUST be another way! I told these people who live in the village that I'd PROVE to them that Jesus exists! I'm not afraid of being humiliated, but- but- they're going to think we're backing down, and-''
