It was early morning in the ancient city of Ephesus. The sun was just rising, and Athena, a small, wise owl, sat on top of a tall column near the Library of Celsus. She stretched her wings and looked down at the busy streets below.
- Good morning, Ephesus!- Athena hooted quietly to herself.
- What will I see today?

As she watched, people began to fill the streets. Merchants set up their stalls, selling bread, olives, and colourful fabrics. Athena flew down to a low branch of a tree near the Agora, the marketplace. From there, she could hear everything.
- Look at this beautiful vase!- said one man to another.
- It’s from Athens.

- I’ll give you two silver coins for it, replied the other man. Athena blinked her large eyes.
-Humans always talk about buying and selling - she whispered.
- But there’s more to life than coins.

A young boy saw Athena and smiled. - Look, Mother! An owl! Isn’t it a symbol of wisdom?
- Yes- his mother said,
- Owls are very wise, like the goddess Athena.

The boy waved at the little owl. Athena fluffed her feathers, feeling proud.
“They know my name!” she thought. Later in the day, Athena flew to the great theatre, where a play was about to begin. People were taking their seats, and the actors were preparing behind the stage. She perched on a stone wall at the top, where she had the perfect view.
