It’s the first day of school,

and I can’t wait.

I won’t be late.

I can’t be late.

I wake up quick,

wear what mom picks,

and eat my breakfast, no fuss.

I pack my pack

and throw it on my back

so I can catch the bus.

I grab my homework.

I don’t forget–

wait just a sec

–it’s my first day. 

There’s no homework yet!

I slip on my slippers

and head out the door.

Wait, this can’t be right–

a grocery store?

I run past the aisles

to find my mom.

I hear a whale

on the intercom.

I’m running fast.

The bus won’t wait.

I can’t be late

to the first day of school!

I trip. I fall.

I land with a sploosh.

I’m underwater.

I hear a whoosh.

When I open my eyes

I see a purple submarine,

but when I blink

it turns blue and green.

I need to get out of here.

I cannot wait.

It’s the first day of school,

and I’m going to be late.

I check my watch,

but it's not there,

and my hands aren't hands-

they're a pair of pears!

As I float there

just looking down,

my tummy makes 

a hungry sound.

I look at the left pear 

and then the right,

but just as I start

to take a bite,

I feel a sharp pain,

and my hands are back again.

Am I losing my brain?

The school might not even let me in.
