It was a quiet, snowy day in Henry’s cabin. The fire in his fireplace crackled and hissed. The wind whooshed, showing sure signs of a snowstorm. And there was old Henry, of course, sitting in his rocking chair.
He slowly sipped his hot cocoa and watched the snowflakes dance and flick around the air.
His watchful brown eyes noticed every strange snowflake and the swirl of the snow. And he noticed a little brown shadow walking through the snow.
As it came closer, Henry saw that it was a young man carrying heavy baggage. Henry stood up, his old bones cracking, and walked to the door. He opened it, and a gust of wind whooshed into the house.
‘’Come in! Hurry, before you freeze out here!” Henry shouted at him.
The young man searched for the source of the voice until his eyes rested on Henry. He hesitated, then approached Henry’s extended hand, welcoming him in.
‘’Hello, son. What are you doing out here?” Henry asked, once he warmed some hot cocoa for the young man and had him seated.
“It was only three miles away, to get to the train station. I… I’m traveling to California to look for a job. I hope this storm settles soon. Say, what time is it? Do you think I’ll be late?”
‘’Slow down, son! We haven’t even been acquainted yet. My name’s Henry, what’s yours?’’
The young man hesitated again, then replied, “John. John…
Harkins.”
“Hmm. Reckon I know your folks. Harkins sound familiar. Well, we’d better pray for this storm to stop, if you want to make it to the evening train.
John’s head turned swiftly at Henry, his eyes blazing with anger.
‘’Prayer has done NOTHING for me!” he snapped. “God certainly wasn’t listening when my mama and papa died.’’
Henry grew quiet. “You’re Luke and Louisa’s son, then?”
‘’yes” was the quiet answer.
‘’And why are you mad at God?”
“The truth is, God never really cared much about me. A lot of bad things happened to me… My life. Truth is, I’m done trying to…” his voice trailed off.
Henry fixed his gaze on John, making John feel unsettled.
Henry asked, “What IS the truth?”
“I… I… What do you-?”
‘’I’ll tell you- The Truth is hard to tell about in one sentence, though. I have a story for you.”
“Um… okay…”
“If someone was to give you a gift, after you did something bad to him, what would you do?”
‘’What a strange scenario! Who would do that?” John
