Once upon a time, in a sleepy little town, there lived four young sisters who loved to dance. They loved to dress up in old costumes their mom had saved for them in an old attic trunk. They loved to twirl and leap and pretend they were famous ballerinas, even though they never had formal ballet lessons. One day that all changed. Their mother came into their playroom one sunny afternoon and announced, "Children, you are all enrolled in the ballet studio starting Monday." To celebrate, their mom purchased some old tutus for them to wear to class at a local antique shop. "The nice man who owns the store told me these tutus were once owned by sisters who were famous ballerina's in the early 1900's," she explained.

"They were so pretty I just couldn't pass them up." The girls were ecstatic. "We get to take real lessons!" Exclaimed Lucy, the eldest. "And we get new costumes to wear!," added Amelie, the second sister. "Now, girls, the costumes are only to be worn for class." Explained their mom. The girls started class the following week and they FINALLY got to wear their new/used tutus. They started in the beginning class, but after that lesson their teacher was so impressed she suggested maybe they take the advanced class. "I had no idea how good you girls were at dancing," their mom said, astonished. The next day, the girls practiced dancing but wore normal play clothes. They weren't nearly as good. They fell down. They weren't as flexible. Their arms were not as graceful. Their leaps were not as grand. The girls couldn't understand. "We were so good in class yesterday."
Said Zoey, (the third sister) puzzled. "Yah, I don't understand it," agreed Penelope, (the youngest sister.) "My grand plies' just weren't as...grand."
Several times a week they danced in their playroom, and they got a little better, but not as good as they were in class. In the following weeks, the girls continued to dance beautifully at the studio, but could not dance that well outside of class. Finally, the time came for their winter performance. The sisters got beautiful sparkly blue costumes to wear, which twinkled in the light. They looked like a winter wonderland. They danced in their recital but again, they were not as good as during their classes. Their parents were proud of them, regardless

(as parents usually are), but they did think something was off. "Maybe it was just performance jitters," suggested their father. "That was weird," the girls thought. They hadn't done a terrible job, but not as good as they expected. Even though they had gotten better than when they first started, they never were as good as they were in the studio. Christmas break came, and the girls had a few weeks off from dance class. They didn't feel like dancing much anyways. They were perplexed by what had happened at the recital. Lucy, the always inquisitive, investigative sister, decided the girls had a mystery on their hands. They wrote down what they had experienced and observed in the last few months. It all boiled down to one fact: when they practiced at home, they weren't as good. "Maybe the dance studio is just magical," suggested Penelope.
The other sisters laughed, but did consider the thought. "Well if that were true, all the other girls would be as just as good as us, too," Observed Lucy. "And let's face it...we are way better then all of the other girls in the advanced class, And they are older than us and have been dancing for years!" "Yeah, don't you think that's a tad weird?" Asked Amelie. "Well...maybe," agreed Lucy. "Maybe we were always that good and just didn't know it because we had never really danced for anyone, just in our playroom." "We could ask Mom and Dad if we were really good before we started classes," Zoey suggested. "No, mom and dad would never tell us the truth," remarked Lucy. "They always think we are amazing at everything. And even if they don't think that,

they would never tell us because they wouldn't want to hurt our feelings. It's a flaw parents have." "Well, mom used to record us dancing," remembered Zoey. "I KNOW she recorded us this past summer. Maybe we could watch some of the videos."
So the girls asked their mom to locate videos of them from the past year or so. They watched and watched. They couldn't believe what they saw. They had so much fun!!! But they weren't very good. Then they saw more recent videos of them dancing, and they were better. But not as good as when they were in class. "Well, that answers that question," sighed Lucy. "We were not just born with a ton of natural talent." "But we always had fun," commented Amelie. That part was true. "Well, when did we start to get really good?" Asked Zoey. "Our first day of class," Penelope said matter-of-factly.
"You are right!! Maybe the studio is magic. We start classes next week. Maybe the studio will answer some questions." The following week, the girls resumed classes. However, they were not, in fact, wearing their tutus. They were wearing regular black leotards because their mom had sent their tutus to the dry cleaners. "Oh, those things were filthy," explained their mom. "They were over-due for a cleaning." So the girls went to dance class in their regular black leotards. And they weren't their usual selves, that's for sure. Some of the girls snickered at them, or rolled their eyes at them when they would mess up leaps and jumps. They definitely did not dance like they were in the advanced class.

So the girls concluded that the studio was not "magical." "I guess the magic must be in the tutus," exclaimed Lucy. "They were from professional dancers." "Well, there's only one way to find out," said Zoey. "Let's get mom's camera again. We'll record us dancing with and without the tutu's on." It sounded like a plan. The girls waited for their mom to get their tutus back from the cleaners. And then it was time for their experiment. That afternoon after school, the girls went upstairs and began dancing without the tutus. Three girls danced while one recorded and they all took turns. Then they slipped the tutus on and took turns dancing and recording. When they got done, they watched the videos carefully on the computer. The difference was astounding. They weren't just a little better while wearing the tutus...They were years more advanced when wearing them. The girls were glad they had solved the mystery but also a bit sad.
