There are 3 phases of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
Matter is everything in existence. Matter is anything
that takes up space and has mass. The phase of matter
an object is depends on how fast molecules are moving.
The molecules are kind of like race car drivers.

Solids
Solid is the first phase of matter. Solids are
formed when molecules are packed tightly
together, which causes them to move slower.
When the "race car drivers" move slower, they
freeze together, and form a solid. You can see
solids. Solids do have specific shapes, and do
not take the shape of their container. When
solids are heated, they melt and form liquids.

Liquids
Liquids are the second phase of matter. Liquids
are formed when molecules are packed loosely
together. When the race car drivers speed up,
they heat up and add energy, which changes
them to liquids. You can see liquids. Liquids do
not have specific shapes. Liquids take the shape
of their containers.

Gases
Gases are the third state of matter. Gases are
formed when molecules are moving at very high
speeds. When the race car drivers speed up
even more, they create heat energy, which
turns a liquid into a gas. You cannot see gases.
Gases do not have a specific shape. Gases take
the shape of their container.
