It is another cold and windy day. Jason started to hear
yelling from outside. King hears it too. To make it worse
King starts to bark.
People start to barge in. There were three men and a
12 year old boy. The boy was crying and his uncle starts
to yell at him. He says that he has to leave him there
because the boy is too big of a cry baby, it is too cold to
be bringing a boy over the trail, and he would never help
portage our supplies.
"I'll be better! I wont cry and I will be a man!" the boy
yells.
"No. You had your chance, and you blew it!"
The men started to leave without the boy. Jason felt
too bad to even speak. The boy goes to bed from crying
for a long time.

The boy started to wake up from the smell of Jason
making mulligan stew. Jason asked about what
happened.
"He never really wanted me to go with them. My dad
passed away a few months ago, so he felt bad and
brought me along."
" What's your name?" Jason asked.
"Charlie. What's your name?"
"Jason. Were you guys heading to Dawson?"
"No. Going back. We already went there. It's starting
to become a boom town. We never mined for gold. My
uncle said I wasn't strong enough to even try. Are you
going to Dawson?"
" Actually yes. Yes I am."

The last few weeks was around 50 below zero. Jason
got wood and Charlie cooked the meals. The days
seemed longer than normal because there was nothing
to do.
The next day Jason and King went to find a bear
they have been hunting. Jason brought his gun and an
ax. Jason poked in a hole with a stick that looked like a
bears den. He felt something as soft as a pillow.
He heard a growl. All of a sudden a big black bear
came bursting out of the den. The bear started to
attack King. When Jason tried to run to help his foot
got stuck in the roots of an old fallen tree. He tried to
shoot his gun but the bullets were in the flour sack
across the field.

King was getting terribly hurt. He got scratched so
bad that he was bleeding up a storm. He bit the bear
on the neck. It fell to the ground.
Jason finally got out and he hit the bear on the
head with his ax.He ran over to King. King was laying
on the ground dying. Jason couldn't help himself, he
cried. King was bleeding horribly. Jason looked into
King's eyes and he said,"King don't leave me." King
died in his arms.
"No!" Jason cried. That was the second dog that
left him.

The next day Jason and Charlie went outside and
hallowed out an old pine tree. They cut it in half and
hallowed out the inside. They laid King's body into it
and stuck it together with oakum and rope. They buried
him right by the house.
The next week they started packing up and going
down the river. Along the way there was a flotilla of
boats. It was a good thing they were in the front. They
reached Dawson in a matter of hours.
