My mother told me about a girl monkey named
Kymone. She lived on a beautiful, bright, sunny
island called Nilsad. Nilsad was a magical place.
The sand was blue and the water was pink. It
tasted like cotton candy. The coconuts could talk,
the oranges could sing and all the monkeys had
friends, except Kymone. She wanted a friend but
no monkey would be her friend. She didn’t look
like any of the other monkeys and they were afraid
of her.

She had three, long, lumpy, bumpy, legs and her
nose was on her chin. One of her hairy, arms was
shorter than the other. One hand had six fingers
and the other only one.

Kymone lived alone on Nilsad's mountain at the
dark, far end of the island. She made a hidden
blue, grey cave her home. She busied herself
everyday making her home beautiful with long,
lush, green, tree limbs, and purple flowers with a
feather or two she found outside her cave.
Creativity was a gift Kymone was blessed to have.
Her creations became her friends but she was still a
very lonely, little monkey girl. Now and then she
ventured out at night to catch a glimpse of the
other monkeys who lived in the valley.

The monkeys looked so happy. They were dancing
and singing along with the coconuts and the
oranges. Some were stretched out on hammocks
swinging to the notes of the melodies they heard.
They were combing each other’s silky hair and
making plans for the next day. Kymone’s eyes
filled with water as she longed to be with the
others. As she wiped a large tear from her cheek,
Kymone heard the church bells that rang out every
evening by the people in the town. By now she
learned to hum the soothing tunes.

Kymone had a beautiful voice and made up words
to make a song.

She noticed that birds would gather around her to
hear her sing.

They didn't seem to notice that she didn't look
like the other monkeys, with her funny looking
arms and a nose that sat on her crooked chin.
Soon, Kymone grew to anticipate the bird visits.
She prepared baskets of wild berries and seeds she
picked from bushes at night. The birds thanked
her by returning songs of their own. They chirped,
whistled and flapped their wings with excitement
for their new found friend. One day Kymone invited
the birds into her freshly cleaned cave to view
some of her creations.

One of the visitors was a cardinal bird called
Dinarcal. He was bright red with a yellow beak
and black markings on his face. He strolled
around the cave and noticed a very tall iron bird
cage. Dinarcal flew up to the top of it so that he
could get a closer look at what was inside. The
cage door was open wide and the spaces between
the bars were twice as large as his little bird body.
He looked inside and saw the loveliest cardinal girl
bird he had ever seen. She sat still on her perch
and paid no attention to Dinarcal. He sang his
sweetest cardinal song but she did not look at him.

Then he sang a song of sorrow. In his song he told
Kymone he was leaving because the beautiful,
caged cardinal bird didn’t like him. With a
lowered head, Dinarcal tearfully flew to Kymone.
She didn’t want him to feel sad. Kymone’s sorrow
soon left when she realized that she could create
something that looked so real it could fool Dinarcal.
Kymone decided to wallow in her new found power
and did not tell Dinarcal that cardinal girl was one
of her creations. She let the birds leave without
telling them the truth.

That night as Kymone prepared to watch the other
monkeys in the valley, a brilliant thought came to
her mind. If Dinarcal believed the beautiful, cage
bird girl was real, then why not make a real
monkey friend for herself who would not fear her or
ever leave.
Kymone went to work that very night. She
gathered mud, straw, bones and fur. She plucked
the eyes of a raccoon, the bones of a bear and the
tails of three unsuspecting horses. She frantically
worked day and night. Feathers flew, hair clumped
and bones rattled. She sewed and packed and
stomped and weaved.

She wanted this creation to be better than all the
others. She started to believe her own creation
was a real monkey friend. She never stopped to
quench her thirst or feed herself. She soon fainted
from hunger and exhaustion. She was unaware of
time. She didn’t notice the rising or setting of the
sun. She fell into a deep sleep. Feeling better,
Dinarcal and some of his bird friends flew back to
the cave to visit Kymone. They whistled and
chirped a song of their arrival.
