One sunny day, under the sea in the Great Barrier Reef,
Mr Gill, the new ecology teacher, entered into his first
class for the day.
"Hello kids!" he shouted.
"Good morning Mr Gill!" they shouted back in unison.
“As this is my first class with you guys I was thinking we
could have a chat before we go on our adventure” said
Mr Gill “Let’s go in a circle and say a couple of
interesting facts about yourself, I will go first”.
“My name is Moorish Idol but you can just call me Mr
Gill” He said with a smile as he scanned his new class. “I
used to live in the pacific region but I moved here 2
months ago”
“Who’s next” He asked

“I’ll go” said a little pink Octopus “My name is Pearl but
when my mum is angry at me she calls me Flapjack
Octopus, and I’m called a flapjack octopus because in
North America a flapjack is like a pancake and I’m kind
of flat like a pancake.”
“Thank you for that pearl, who’s next” said Mr Gill
“I’ll go” said Sheldon the seahorse
“My full name is Sheldon Seahorse and I like to swim
but I would rather hold tails with my mum because I get
quite scared”
“That’s alright maybe after school you will be confident
enough to swim by yourself” said Mr Gill. “Anyone want
to go next”.
invertebrates and algae”
“Perfect” said Mr Gill.

“I want to go next Mr Gill” said Deb the Humbug Damsel
fish.
“Very well” said Mr Gill looking at Deb.
“My name is Deb the Humbug Damsel fish, but all my
friends just call me Deb” she said with a smile. “I was
born in The Pacific Ocean and I moved when I was a
baby”
“Last but not least we have Squirt”
“Hello everybody my name is Squirt I’m a sea turtle and
I have breathing problems so I have to go up and get
air occasional” he said in a shy voice.
“Thank you for that class. Today we'll be learning about
Great White Sharks!!"
"OOOO!" the kids whispered back to him.

"First, let’s head outside and find some natural habitats
that they might live in."
They all headed outside, into the warm water and
swam around, searching for places that Great White
Sharks might hide in.
"Hey, Mr Gill! I found this big cave that a big White
Pointer might hide in!" exclaimed Deb the damsel fish.
Mr Gill started to explain why great white sharks we so
feared in the big ocean.
“They are one of the most deadly animals they eat
almost anything” he said
The children all looked very frightened.
Don’t worry said Mr Gill there are a lot of precautions
that you can take to insure your safety, Does anyone
know what they might be.

“I know, I know” said Bloat the puffer fish,
“you have to puff up because sharks don’t like
eating sharp thing”.
“Very good” said Mr Gill “But unfortunately
not every fish can puff up as well as puffer
fish can”
“What about inking” said pearl the flapjack
octopus
“Another brilliant idea but sadly not everyone
can ink like an octopus” said Mr Gill with
a smile.
“What is something that we can all do to
stay safe” asked Mr Gill.
“Swim away as fast as possible and hide”
said Squirt the sea turtle.
“Excellent” Applauded Mr Gill.
