In the library in Florida there were lots of books. The 

library was always bustling. But there was one book that 

never got checked out. He was a lonely book. All the 

books that got checked out were diary of the wimpy kid, 

Percy Jackson, and Big Nate, books like that. The lonely 

book was a big fat dictionary. Nobody had ever checked 

him out. Every day, the lonely dictionary would sit on the 

window sill crying.   

The lonely book sat on the window sill day and night. He 

never stopped crying. All the kids would glance at him, 

then turn away and pick up an interesting book. Not 

him. He wasn't an interesting book. He was a big, fat, 

dictionary.

At school, a girl named Karen sat at her desk frowning at 

her test. She had gotten a C. She looked up. The teacher 

was saying something. "On Friday there will be a 

vocabulary test, I know none of us has done it before, so 

study hard, you are dismissed!" Karen lifted her backpack 

up, and walked out of the classroom. School was over! 

She needed to get a dictionary for her test on Friday. 

When her mom picked her up, she asked her mom to 

drive her to the library. When Karen got there she saw 

Nate and Trevor were also getting out of their car. Nate 

and Trevor were her classmates. She'd have to hurry if 

she wanted a dictionary! She jumped out of the car and 

ran inside the building. She rushed to were a dictionary 

lay on the window sill. It was strangely wet. She 

shrugged, and checked it out just as Nate and Trevor 

burst in.
