Beside a sparkling river stood an old tree house.

Right beside the river is the little wooden house with a leafy roof and a bright green door.

Mama called it the Spelling Tree House.

One morning, she took her daughter, Maya, by the hand.

“Where are we going, Mama?” Maya asked.

“To a place where we can listen, learn, and make words.”

Maya loved stories, but sometimes the letters in her books seemed to keep their sounds a secret.

At the door of the tree, Mama stopped.

“Before we go in, close your eyes. What can you hear?”

“Water!” said Maya. “And birds! And something buzzing!”

A bee drifted past a patch of flowers.

“Bzzzz,” Maya hummed.

“Bee begins with /b/,” Mama said, making one quick sound.

 “Can you make that sound?”

“/b/!” said Maya.

"/b/. Bee. Branch. Book.” said Mama

“And boat!” Maya said, pointing to a boat on the river.

Just then, a breeze slipped through the window.

“Feel the air on your teeth and lip,” Mama said. “/fff/.”

Maya tried it. “/fff/!”

Mama placed the letter f on the table.

“Fish begins with /f/.”
