Once upon a time, there was a young,
stressed-out, first-year teacher by the name
of Miss Mize. Miss Mize was so frustrated--she
could not get her students to give her the
results she wanted! It seemed like instructions
went in one ear and out the other. Miss Mize
didn't know what to do!

The KEG is here!

Thankfully, Miss Mize had one of the best
teacher mentors (and was regarded as sort of a
superhero) around! As soon as Miss Ennis saw
Miss Mize's dismay, she passed down a teaching
strategy she had used in her own classroom for
years. The KEG, Miss Ennis assured, would help
Miss Mize effectively manage her classroom!
"What does KEG mean, anyway?" Miss Mize
inquired.
"Well, I thought you would never ask! Let me
explain!"

"The 'K' stands for KNOW," Miss Ennis
explained. In order for you to get the outcome
you want, you as the teacher must KNOW what
the outcome is and how to recognize it. You
should know what the outcome looks like,
sounds like, and feels like."
"Oh!" Miss Mize exclaimed. "Of course! I can't
expect something specific from my students if I
don't even know exactly what or how I am
expecting!"
"Now you're getting it!" replied Miss Ennis.

"Now, stay with me!" Miss Ennis encouraged.
"The 'E' in KEG stands for EXPLAIN. You must
effectively tell your students what you expect of
them (only after you KNOW it, of course). When I
EXPLAIN, I think it is best to use the Four
Principles of Powerful Communication:
1) Elicit positive images,
2) Direct their focus,
3) Be inclusive, and
4) Be specific.
Keep this step in mind--you cannot succeed
without explaining what is expected!"
