One day my friend Jason and I were playing basketball outside of 

his house. Jason was thirsty so his Mom brought him some water 

outside to drink. After he drank some of his water we finished 

playing. We played for a long time. When we were done Jason 

said, "Hey! You drank the rest of my water! I was thirsty!" I said, 

"No I didn't! I was too busy playing basketball with you but I think 

I know where your water went. Have you ever heard of the water 

cycle?" 

Jason replied, "Yes I've heard about the water cycle but what does that 

have to do with my glass of water that you drank?"

I told Jason, "the water cycle doesn't just affect lakes, rivers, and the 

ocean. It can work on any kind of water. Even the water in your glass. 

The first step in the water cycle is evaporation. Evaporation is when 

the sun heats up water and turns it into vapor or steam. Then the 

water vapor disappears into the air. That's where your water went. It 

disappeared into water vapor! Isn't that cool?"Jason smiled really big 

and said, "I'm sorry man. I thought you drank my water. Let's go 

inside and get some more water to drink."
