From A to Z on the Bay Line Train
Author: Emily Sutherland
Illustrated by: Emily Sutherland and
Stacey's Fun in the Sun Pre-School VPK-A class
of 2014-2015

The Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay
Railroad, or The Bay Line, was
founded in 1905 by Dothan
lumber magnate A. B. Steele.

The Bay Line's primary route was
81 miles of track from Dothan,
Alabama to Panama City, Florida.

The line itself was built in two
phases. The first phase was
built quickly, running from
Dothan to Cottondale.

The second phase was built a year later
in 1906. Mr. Steele had to decide
where the line would lay. It took the
track from Cottondale to Panama City.

Everyone was excited
when the line was
finished in 1908.

The Bay Line carried freight to
the Panama City area. It carried
timber to the sawmill, goods to
residents, and passengers.

Goods are still delivered on
The Bay Line today. Timber,
pipes, and steel are just a
few things that are
transported.

The Bay Line delivered these
goods to the only Harbor around
at the time. The harbor is still in
Panama City. It is called the Port.

In 1930, The Bay Line was
purchased by International
Paper.

In January, 1947, the ASAB
was granted Class I railroad
status by the Interstate
Commerce Commission.

This was a key
turning point for
The Bay Line.

The Bay Line became the
first 100% diesel
locomotive equipped
Class 1 railroad in the
US.

Many people traveled
to see the new diesel
trains.

New jobs were forming at the Bay
Line in the Panama City area due to
the war.

With the ocean being near, the port helped to build ships during
WWI and WWII. The Bay Line delivered the metal to build the ships.

Both World Wars proved fruitful for the railroad in
terms of traffic.

Many people questioned if the
Bay Line would survive after both
wars.

The railroad continued to do well. More railroad
connections and crossings were added.
