Meet Kayla.   She is a amazing 

13year old who loves to spend 

time outdoors. She lives in 

Florida "The Sunshine State" 

with her parents and her little 

brother Andre.

One day Kayla and her family went to 

the beach. Kayla and her brother were 

really excited to get in the water.

"whoa whoa get back here! You cant go 

swimming without sunscreen" Kayla's 

mom said. "why?" Andre replied. 

"The sunscreen will protect you from the 

harmful sun. Without sunscreen you 

would get a sun burn or even develop 

skin cancer!

"What is skin cancer" Kayla asked. "Skin 

cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal 

skin cells. You can get skin cancer by being out 

in the sun or tanning beds.''

"Oh i do not want that.'' Andre said. 

The kids put on there sunscreen and then they 

got in the water. 

The next day Kayla was really interested 

to learn more about skin cancer. So she 

decided to ask her mom about it. "Mom 

do you know the symptoms of skin 

cancer ?" Kayla asked. 

" Yea. Some symptoms are   A mole on 

the skin that is growing, changing 

shape, or changing color. That is the 

symptoms for melanoma which is one of 

the worse skin cancer there is." Since 

you are really interested in skin cancer 

you should go to skincancer.org for 

more helpful information.'' kayla's mom 

replied. 

"thanks mom! Kayla said excitedly . 

The next day Kayla went on the website. She found 

a lot of information about skin cancer. She went to 

go tell her dad about what she learned. "Hey dad, 

want to hear some cool stuff about skin cancer." 

"Sure "He replied. "I learned that skin cancer is the 

most common cancer in the united states , and 

that melanoma is the most serious type of skin 

cancer. And some way you can prevent it is to 

cover up in the sun, avoid tanning beds and find 

shade from 10 am to 4 pm. 

" That is a lot of good information. " 

Her dad replied. "I know. Now I know 

how prevent skin cancer and i can tell 

my friends how they can stay safe in 

the sun!
