It was Christmas Eve, and today was a big day 

for Aneila. She was going to the forest to get a 

Christmas tree with her cousins. She was the 

oldest so she had to lead them. 

Aneila called for her cousins and they all got ready 

for a hike in the snow. Jenak was ready with the ax 

to cut down the tree. Adam was ready with the sled 

to pull it home. They headed out the door into the 

snowy wonderland. 

"Be careful, Aneila," shouted her mother, "There 

have been sightings of wolves." 

"Don't worry, mother. We'll be fine," replied Aneila. 

Trudging along in the snow, Adam, the youngest 

cousin, was looking for the perfect Christmas tree. 

"Wow, look at that one. Can we have it?"

"It does look great," agreed Aneila.

Jenak swung the ax several times, then heard a 

"crack" and it fell down. 

While they were tying it onto the sled, Adam said 

something that made them all freeze in their 

tracks. "Wolf," he whispered. 

"Aneila?" said the other two, "What do we do?

"Stay still, children," whispered Aneila, "Don't 

move."

The wolf came closer. As his golden eyes met 

Aneila's, she trembled. He sniffed the air, his big 

black coat shining in the sun.
