Once upon a time there was a little girl named Irene
who lived alone with her daddy. She loved to play
outside with her animals, they were her friends. To
everyone who knew her she seemed to be happy, but
the truth is that she had a secret that no one knew
about.

Her mother and father divorced when she was
very little. She was once told that her mommy
wanted to be free from the responsibility of
being a mommy and that really hurt.

Irene had many questions, she wonder what she did
to have caused her mommy to leave. She wondered if
she was maybe not pretty, sweet or kind enough. It
must have been her fault, or why else would her
mommy leave her? She started to believe that she
was not good enough. She kept that question a
secret hidden away in her heart.

Sadness crept in and it was
harder to play, to smile and
to hide her pain...

The phone rang and Irene picked it up.
She heard her mother's voice on the
other side. She couldn't move and felt a
bump in her throat making it difficult to
talk. Her tummy felt sick and she didn't
know what to say. Her mommy said she
would come visit next week.

The days past and her mommy wouldn't come.
Irene worried and wondered if something bad
happened to her mommy.
She thought that maybe tomorrow she would
arrive.

A week went by and her mommy finally
arrived. Somehow she hoped that things
would be better. Her mommy brought a
big luggage full of toys.....she was
excited, but what she really wanted was
for her mom to hold her and say "I love
you". She wondered why her mother
would not say that to her.
