Ben was a persistent 

boy, his mother always 

said. 

"Mom? What does persistent mean?" Ben's mom gave 

him some examples, like how Ben always hit the tennis 

ball against the side of the house until Mom and Dad 

finally had to tell him to stop. "Oh,"said Ben, "like 

when I keep asking Angie to play cards with me, and 

she keeps saying no?" "Yes," said Ben's mom, "just like 

that."

Angie is Ben's big sister. She thinks Ben is, what she 

calls "a royal pain in the neck" because he asks for 

things over and over and he does things until he 

annoys everyone in the house. She just wishes Ben 

would stop being persistent for awhile. 

Mom reminds Angie that Ben is still young, only 

seven, and that sometimes being persistent can be 

good. Angie can't understand what could ever be 

good about her brother's persistence. 

Then one beautiful spring day Ben decided he 

wanted to take the training wheels off of his 

bicycle and finally learn how to ride a two-wheeler, 

like Joey down the street. He got his dad to 

remove the wheels, but dad said he didn't have 

time that day to help teach Ben how to ride. So 

Ben went to his mom, who was in the middle of 

planting her flower garden. 

Ben went to Angie, who had a friend over, so that 

was out of the question. Angie and her friend did 

not want to spend their Saturday afternoon 

together helping her little brother learn how to 

ride a two-wheeler.
