When we learn about the world, we often use
the term geography. This word is broken up into
two parts: GEO-GRAPHY. GEO means "the earth".
GRAPHY means a descriptive science. So
geography means describing scientifically the
earth! When we talk about geography, we don't
just talk about the rocks, we can look at the
people and animals living there, what it looks like,
the temperature, and other important features.

There are 5 major themes of geography. Look at this diagram or picture
with 5 different themes. Can you pronounce each one?

1) Location - This is the position on earth's surface. There are two parts:
absolute and relative. Absolute is using the grid system we use to plot locations
(latitude and longitude) while relative location is used to describe the positions
of people and places on the earth.
2) Place - Different places are characterized by physical and human
characteristics.
Examples of physical characteristics are land-forms, bodies of water, climate,
soil, animal life, and natural plants.
Examples of human characteristics are aspects such as language spoken,
religions practiced, settlement patterns, ways of transportation, jobs, and more.
3) Human-Environment Interaction - This is a neat one! With human-
environment interactions, you think about the advantages (positives) and
disadvantages (negatives) of humans living and staying (settling) on this area of
earth, and the way people have changed the environment of the place.
Three parts: humans ADAPT to, CHANGE, and DEPEND on the environment.

5 themes mean?

4) Movement - This is how humans interact with each other on the earth,
including PEOPLE, IDEAS, and GOODS/SERVICES. Think about if you ate a
cheeseburger in a restaurant; what movement and interactions (or actions by
people) did it have to go through in order to be on your dinner plate?
5) Regions - Lastly, this is how areas are connected or are unified, either
physically or culturally.
Cultural regions are grouped by languages, religions, governments, and
economics.
Physical regions are grouped by land-forms, climate, soil, and plants grown in
the area (vegetation).

the 5 themes again and explain
each one in your own words!

how the 5 themes of geography can
help us see the similarities and differences
of them!

Location
Absolute: 35.7319° N (Latitude), 78.8528° W (Longitude)
Relative: 14.79 Miles – to Raleigh (South West)
Place
Physical Characteristics: Can be humid and hot during the summer, has a
man-made Lake,is mostly flat, and has deer, squirrels, birds, bunnies, and
other woods creatures in the area. Maple and evergreen trees populate the
area naturally.
Human Characteristics: English is the language, multiple different major
religions practiced (Christianity, Islam, Judaism), and people often move
here from the Northern States or a different country. Most people have their
own car and drive to work in RTP or an area within 30 minutes.
Human-Environment Interaction
Adapt - Built homes that are organized in neighborhoods to fit lots of
people in the area.
Change - Created lakes, cut down trees, built roads and buildings all over
the area.
Depend - People depend on it to provide beautiful landscapes to relax in, or
parks where they can go take a hike.

Movement
Ideas: Many people learn about ideas from the internet, as it is a very
connected area to the world. They also use smart phones.
Goods & Services: Lots of restaurants, small businesses, and national
stores in the area. People have a wide variety of options for purchases.
Regions
Apex is part of Wake County, the Piedmont region of NC, and the South
of the USA.

Which theme of geography was the most familiar to you?

Location
Absolute: 34.2233° N (Latitude), 77.9122° W (Longitude)
Relative: 133 Miles – to Raleigh (South West)
Place
Physical Characteristics: On the actual beach, it gets really hot during the
Summer since the sand reflects the sun. The Atlantic ocean is next to
Wilmington. Crabs, fish, seagulls and other ocean creatures inhabit this area.
Human Characteristics: English is the language, multiple different major religions
practiced (Christianity, Islam, Judaism). People either live here all year, or come
for just portions of the year to their beach house. Tourist attractions are the
main businesses, and people might walk or bike around town.
Human-Environment Interaction
Adapt - Built homes that are near the coast, but as the coastline changes, they
have to move houses further back, or make sure they are elevated above sea
level in case of a big storm.
Change - Created bridges, docs, depleted fish supplies, and have either helped or
hurt turtles, crabs, or other creatures living on the beach.
Depend - People depend on the ocean for food, and the area for tourists to come
so they can make money.
