A Pinch and a Sting
When it is time to get a needle a child
has a fear of being hurt. A doctor dressed
in a big white coat entering the room with a
smile can be very scary. A child has the look
of worry on their face.

A little girl is going to school real soon.
She will be going to kindergarten. The
school requires every child to get their
vaccinations. A vaccination keeps each child
from getting really sick when they grow up.

The little girl's name is Tara Lynn. Tara
Lynn will make a trip to the doctor
tomorrow with mommy. Mommy has
prepared Tara Lynn for this very
important appointment.

Every day in the past week mommy
would sit and talk to Tara Lynn. She would
ask Tara Lynn about her feelings when she
will get the vaccination. Tara Lynn has many
questions to ask mommy. She sat up on the
couch beside mommy and began asking
questions.

'Why do I have to get a needle? Tara
Lynn asked.
Every child needs to get a needle. Do you
want to get really sick?' mommy asked.
'No mommy. I do not want to get sick'
Tara Lynn replied.

'Did you ever get a needle when you were a
little girl like me mommy? Did the needles hurt
you? Tara Lynn asked.
'I have had lots of needles since I was a
little girl. I think they may have hurt. It was
many years ago since I was a little girl'
mommy said with a smile on her face.

'It was not the first needle I was given.
I got a needle with I was one year old just
like you did' mommy continued to answer.
'You were a baby? The needle must have
made you cry' Tara Lynn said in a scared
voice.

'When my mommy took me to get my needle
she had told me that I whimpered for just a
few seconds and then I was back to making
silly baby noises' mommy told Tara Lynn.
'I am still afraid mommy. Why can't I wait
until next year? I will be ready then. I will be
older' Tara Lynn replied.

'Tara Lynn, we will go to the doctor's office
tomorrow as we have planned. Do you remember
what I have taught you in preparing for your
needle?' mommy said in a comforting voice.
'Yes I do remember everything you have told
me. I still cannot help being scared' Tara Lynn
replied.
