With the beginning of my life in a small nest on the crown of an
oak tree on 'Asad Jan Road', I opened my eyes in the cozy shell
laid by my mom 'Tina'. Mom was slightly brownish golden, unlike
the normal black eagles of Lahore; my grandma Betsy, used to
say, "She belonged to the royal family of the great 'Golden
Eagles' from "Kashmir Mountains."
Betsy and my grandpa got married and settled in a newly grown
up oak tree. They made a nest in the crown of the oak tree and
grandma Betsy laid eggs. Grandma used to tell some nice stories
about Lahore, “Lahore was a medium sized walled city with forts
and parks and a lot of places to hunt along the River Ravi. You
could see through the sparkling water of the Ravi and get your
fish catch with ease. There were very few roads and carts and no
hassles.”

Then my mom was born with three brothers; Hulk, Cena and
Reigns; The family celebrated it with lot of pomp and show.
The family had the feast with a blast, there were rats and
snakes and some chunks of meat from a butchery nearby.
My grandpa ate so much that he had
to consult the 'Eagle Doctor' who
advised him to keep flying for next
three days without a nap.

My mom Tina would grow into a young and pretty eagle who
would be watched by the neighbours with an envy. Her brother
Hulk was strong and bold who was the first one from the chicks
to hunt independently.
Cena was the smartest and brainiest of all; He could
remember the places, keep a record of new roads, farms and
butcheries in the walled city. Cena became the family spotter
and tracker, just like the modern GPS. Cena could even fly
through those hundreds of kites during 'The Basant' festival.

Reigns was cunning and fast and was known as the “Fox Eagle”
in the family. He would easily steal the meat from the butchers
and had no problem in spotting the prey to catch. Reigns was
like a silent shadow who would easily fool the prey and even
his brothers.
However; the brothers
would never annoy or
cheat my mom as they loved
her so much.

By the time the flock of my mom grew into teenager eagles, Lahore had
changed a lot. It had grown larger, with more streets, houses and buildings;
the traffic noise started having a telling effect on the hunting environment
and electric pylons and wires would obstruct the flight of eagles.
One day my grandpa held a little family gathering and addressed the
younger lot. “Hey folks, this is not the Lahore of our times…Ha-ha! I see you
getting injured by the wires and now there is electricity! which can certainly
burn you, if you happen to touch them; you know.” Addressing Reigns he
said;
“Reigns; Are you getting me? And those tall buildings could break your
neck…if you keep moving at that speed…and the butchers have become
smarter now…So watch for the traps before they chop your wings off.”
So our old folks including my Mom and uncles adapted to the new Lahori
environment.

l Every morning before
sunrise, Cena the
spotter would rally out of
the nest,carry out a route
survey and locate each and
every wire and pylon along
the chosen route. He would
make a mental sketch of farm
houses, barns and butcheries so
that my mom and the othertwo brothers could hunt with ease.
Mom would tell us how hunting in new Lahore used to be such a fun in
those days. “We would normally take the northern route selected by
‘Cena the spotter’ for going out and the southern route for returning
home, the game was full of meaty stuff and we had the best time of
our life hunting and flying.”
