teachers for today. Today's lesson is 

succession....

Succession:

The gradual and orderly process of change in 

an ecosystem brought about by the progressive 

replacement of one community by another until 

a stable climax is established community by 

another until a stable climax is established.

Primary Succession:

Primary succession happens on an area of newly 

exposed rock or sand or lava or any area that 

has not been occupied previously by something 

living. 

It starts out by rock.

Primary Succession:

The second step of primary succession is 

when lichen and then moss starts to grow. 

Lichen occurs as crusty patches or bushy 

growths on tree trunks or rocks or bare 

ground etc.

Primary Succession:

The third step is when small herbs and shrubs 

start to grow and then creating a health mat which 

is a layer of plants covering the ground.

Now the first animals to come in are insects and 

small animals including birds and rodents. Plants 

(producers) are growing so herbivores (1st 

consumers) are starting to come. These are 

pioneer species.

Primary Succession:

The fourth step is when larger trees start 

forming, at this point tertiary consumers are there 

and the land is good and hardy. When even bigger 

trees start forming more animals come in and that 

place becomes a climax community.
