in the big woods near the end of the
village. Springtime was in the air!
Everyone was busy! It seemed like
everyone had something important to do.
Coco and Kaya were going to be busy
soon too. They had a problem. They
needed to turn into butterflies this
season, but they didn't know how. Then
they saw their bumble bee friends.
Bumble bees are fliers. Surely they would
know what caterpillars do to become
butterflies.

"Billy, Bonnie, Brady, we have a problem, a
big, big problem," said Kaya. "This season
we need to become butterflies but we don't
know how. Will you help us?"
"Oh, we're much too busy. We simply
couldn't help you now," said Bonnie.
"Yes, we've got to get back and forth to our
hive. It's springtime, you know. There's so
much to be done," replied Billy.
"So so so much to be done," added Brady.
And off they went, in a busy flutter.
"Oh no," signed Coco. "Who will help us?" So
off they went, to look for someone who
might help.
Then they came to their friends, the family of
ants. Every ant was busy. They moved fast! The
caterpillars could hardly keep up with them.
Watching all that work made Coco and Kaya
hungry. In fact, they both felt very, very hungry.
The girls knew the ants often enjoyed a good
picnic. They thought maybe the ants would join
them for lunch. Then they could ask the ants for
help. Maybe the ant family knew how
caterpillars became butterflies.

Coco called to the ants. "Hey, Annie, Agnes,
Addison, Alice, Alvina!" Kaya joined in,
"Albert, Antoine, Alfred, Arnold, Aaron! We'd
like to invite you to a picnic. With all this
work, you must be hungry." Kaya noticed
Alfred. He looked mad. "Alfred, what's
wrong?" she asked.
"We've got work to do. Lots and lots of
work. We don't have time for a picnic! Don't
you two know it's spring?" complained
Alfred.
"But we need help," said Coco in her
saddest voice. "Won't someone please tell
us how to become butterflies?" Off they
went.
Coco and Kaya could not wait any longer. They
were hungry, really hungry. "It's time for
lunch," they both agreed. "Hey, look at all these
tasty green plants!" They were ready for a
feast! They ate, and ate, and ate some more. In
fact, they enjoyed their picnic so much, they
forget their becoming a butterfly problem. The
more they ate, the more they grew. The more
they grew, the more they began to shed their
old layers of skin. This was called molting. The
molting caused their looks to change. Now they
became different colors than before.

Coco and Kaya just ate. They ate like they've
never eaten before. They didn't even notice
their friends, Lucy Ladybug, Doris Dragonfly,
and Francine Fly fluttering over their picnic.
"Hello caterpillars! We see you're enjoying a
tasty lunch. You'll need it. You've got lots of
work to do to become fliers like us!" That got
the attention of the hungry and slightly larger
caterpillars. "Did you say we have work to do?"
"Well, yes . . . it's almost time to find a place
to begin building," said Francine.
"You've got to build yourselves a chrysalis.
Some call it a pupa," added Lucy.
Coco and Kaya finished their meal. They felt
very satisfied. Doris, Lucy, and Francine led
the caterpillars to a new place in the big
woods. The trees were full and the leaves
made it shady and cool. It was perfect for a
place to rest. They both picked a long branch
and let their caterpillar bodies hang down.
Something was happening.
