It’s been one year since Rachel’s accident. It was dark, chilly, rainy
night and the roads were very slippery. Everybody was okay except
Rachel who had been hurt bad. Even though she relies on a
wheelchair to get around now, she is still a brave and joyful little
girl.
Rachel has always loved horses. They are her favourite animal.
Her love for them started when she rode a pony at a birthday party.
Horses have always made her happy. She had pictures of them all
over her room and various horse toys and dolls on the shelves.

Before her accident, she had started horseback riding lessons.
Rachel loved the freedom of being on a horse as it galloped
around the pen. She felt lighter than air when she was riding
her horse. She really felt like she was flying
It had been a year since Rachel was on a horse and she didn’t
really talk about them anymore. She was never afraid of
horses though despite their impressive size and power.
Rachel had a calming effect on them. They seemed to respond
to her gentle ways.

When she first started riding lesson, Rachel would mainly
stay in the fenced-in pen. But eventually she got more
confident and would join her fellow riders on some relaxing
nature trails. She enjoyed the fresh air and all of the new
friends she had made.
Rachel was a very responsible girl. She would take good care
of the horses making sure that they were brushed and fed
every day. Before her accident, Rachel’s parents wanted to
buy her a horse. They would keep him at the stables of course
where Rachel could go and visit him anytime she wanted.

But Rachel seemed to have lost interest and so her parents
never pursued it. Out of the blue one day, Rachel began
talking about the horse that she used to ride. She called him
Chico. He was a handsome boy that was tan and brown
With her 11th birthday coming up, Rachel’s parents started to
think about having a party for her at the stables with all of
her friends from school. It would be good for her to get back
to where she spent so many happy times with the horses that
she loved.

The morning of her birthday, Rachel’s parents told her they
were going to take her out for breakfast. Little did she know
that she was in for a big surprise Their van drove past her
favourite restaurant and kept going to the outskirts of town.
Confused, Rachel wondered where they were going
When they arrived at the stables her Mom opened the side
door and Rachel was greeted by all of her friends. “Surprise!”
they all screamed.

Rachel’s eyes lit up and her mouth opened wide. There were
horses everywhere! Rachel wanted to skip the pizza
and didn’t even want to open her presents. She headed to the
fence where a brown horse grazed “Who’s this good-looking
boy?” she asked.“His name is Pegasus” answered her Dad.
Rachel couldn’t take her eyes off him
Pegasus had been a race horse before he ended up here at the
stables. He wasn’t very successful as he never won any of his
races. He was born with a problem in one of his legs that kept
him running very fast.

Rachel noticed that Pegasus walked with a bit of limp and
seemed to be a little unsteady on his feet. Rachel quickly ate
her pizza, blew out the candles on her cake, and tore the
wrapping off her presents. She couldn’t wait to get back to
Pegasus.
One of the horse groomers gave her some sugar cubes that
Pegasus ate right out of her hand. She put her head close to
the horse’s face as she fed him another handful of treats as
he began pushing closer towards here. “Sorry boy, I have no
more snacks.”
