Hey Kids! Today we're going to
learn about the formation of our
HUGE solar system!

Our solar system formed from a cloud of dust and gas
which con-caved under its own gravity known as the solar
nebula. Next, a disk of dust and gas formed at the center
of which was a star, me! The dust particles in the disk ran
into each other and stuck together, eventually growing
large enough to form the planets.

Very quickly, I would like to give you background
information on how the solar system and the universe
started!

So, Let's start with..Me!

I make up 99.85% of the composition in
the universe!

I am the richest source of electromagnetic energy.
I am mostly hydrogen (about 70%) and helium
(about 28%). Carbon, nitrogen and oxygen make up
1.5% and the other 0.5% is made up of small amounts
of many other elements such as neon, iron, silicon,
magnesium and sulfur.

My surface temperature
is around 5500 degrees Celsius!
(9941 degrees Fahrenheit). My core
is around 13600000 degrees
Celsius.

I generate huge amounts
of energy by combining
hydrogen nuclei into helium.

Next we're going to talk about the formation
of planets! Starting with Mercury, take it away!

To start I want to share
that the planets and I
make up 0.135% of the
solar system

I am the closest planet to the sun, smallest planet and not easily seen in twilight. Also for every
two orbits of the Sun, I complete three rotations about my axis and up until 1965 I was thought
that the I constantly faced the Sun on a particular side. My surface temperature is -173 to 427°C
and I was recorded by Assyrian astronomers.

A year on me is 88 days long and I
have wrinkles because iron core cools and
contract. Theses wrinkles are called Lobate
Scarps.

I formed because remaining material clumped up and leftovers turned into
small planets, which is me. My metallic core formed first, gathered lighter elements to form crust.

Thank you Mercury, next is Venus!

OK, to start I am the second brightest planet and sister to
Earth because of our similar size and mass.

My surface is obscured by an opaque layer of
clouds made up of sulfuric acid. My surface
temperature is 462 celsius, one day lasts
longer than a year, I rotate counter-clockwise,
my atmospheric pressure is 92 times greater than
the Earth’s and I am the hottest planet.

I formed the same
way Mercury did!

Awesome job Venus,
now we have Earth!

Thanks Sun, I am so excited to
tell you all about how I came to be me!

I am the largest terrestrial planet and the only known planet to support life!

My surface temperature is -88 degrees to 58 degrees celsius.
My rotation is gradually slowing and I was once believed to be
in the center of the universe. I have a powerful magnetic field
and there is only one natural satellite of me!

I formed starting with a rocky core, then dense materials sank to the center.
Lighter materials formed the crust and gravity pulled in lighter elements that
created my atmosphere.

Early in life, I was hit by a large piece, the pieces flew together
to make the moon. The movement of the large
plates of rock on the surface of the Earth caused plate tectonics.
Collisions and friction created mountains and volcanoes, spewing
gases into my atmosphere. Also, collisions from comets and asteroids
most likely placed water on me!

Mars formed by starting very hot
because of energy from collisions.
The interior melted and denser
elements such as iron sank to
center, making the core. Lighter
elements formed the mantle and the least dense elements
formed the crust. It was said Mars had a magnetic field
but as the planet cooled, the field died. Young Mars
had active volcanoes, spewing lava and water and
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

There is a lot to say about Mars but I will keep it short!

The Mars atmosphere is composed of mainly
carbon dioxide. The surface temperature is
-87 to -5 degrees celsius. Mars also has the
same landmass Earth! Mars has 2 moons,
the tallest mountain in solar system, and there
has been 18 successful missions out of 40 to Mars.
Mars has the largest dust storms in the solar system and
pieces of Mars have actually fallen to Earth! Finally, an
amazing and recent discovery made was signs of liquid
on the face of Mars.

Along with the discovery
of water, liquid water couldn't
exist on this surface,
but studies have shown
water may be trapped
underground in both liquid
and frozen forms and in
ice sheets of polar ice caps.

Wow! Lots and lots of facts!
Moving on, we have Jupiter!

I am 2.5 times more massive than all the
other planets combined. I am the “gas giant”.
My surface temperature is -108 degrees Celsius,
I have 67 moons and 4 known rings. I am the
fourth brightest object and have the shortest day of
all the planets (9 hours and 55 minutes).

Hey guys! Jupiter here!
Let me tell you some facts
about me!

Because I rotate so fast, that gives my face a nice round look. I also have unique
cloud features, my the upper atmosphere is divided into cloud belts and zones. That
birthmark I have, has raged for 350 years. It's a huge storm! My insides are made
up of rock, metal and hydrogen compounds. I have the largest moon in the solar
system-Ganymede. I also have a thin ring system above cloud tops and it stretches
out 225,000 km. 8 spacecrafts have visited me- Pioneer 10 and 11, Voyager 1 and 2,
Galileo, Cassini, Ulysses and New Horizons missions.

I am mainly hydrogen and 10% helium. Collisions on me
cause increased temperatures and dense elements make up
my core. I formed quickly so I captured all the hydrogen
and helium necessary right away.

Excellent Jupiter!
Now we have Saturn!

I am the most distant planet that can be seen
with a naked eye and I'm known for my ring
system. I have 30+ (7 groups) rings and 62
moons. My surface temperature is -139 degrees
Celsius and I am the flattest planet.
