On a beautiful spring day a little filly was born. She was
tiny, and white with little black speckles on her face and
sides. Her mama looked down at her and said "You are
as white as the doves that fly in the sky, so I will call
you Dove and hope that someday you will fly high."

There were several other young foals that were born
about the same time Dove was, because it was foaling
season. Dove was the smallest of the foals but she had
no problem keeping up with the rest! She ran and bucked
and played games with all the other foals in the big field
while their mothers watched close by eating their grass.

One day, a tall leggy palomino foal called Sunnie, began to make
fun of Dove and how small she was.
"What's wrong with you?" taunted Sunnie "Why are you so
small? Are you a runt?" The other foals laughed.
This hurt Dove's feelings. She ran to tell her mother about the
teasing.

Her mother comforted her nickering softly in her ear " Don't worry
Dove, you are suppose to be smaller, you are made to be a child's
horse. Someday you will belong to a little boy or girl and it will be up
to you to take care of that child. Being a child's horse is a special
job. You are a very lucky horse." Dove liked the idea of belonging to
a child this made her feel special and happy.
The next time when the foals made fun of Dove, she remembered
what her mama had told her. "I'm glad I'm smaller." she said
proudly "Someday I will be a child's horse and everyone knows that's
the most important job of all."
After that the foals didn't make fun of Dove's size again.

Time passed from spring to summer to fall. The wind began to grow cold and Dove's
hair began to grow thicker to keep her warm for the winter.
Dove noticed that with the colder weather her mother seemed to become sad.
"What's the matter mama? Have I done something wrong?" asked Dove
With a heavy sigh, her mother said "No my love, it's just that soon it will be time for
you to leave."
Dove was shocked she immediately began to argue "Mama I would never leave you!"
In a soothing calm voice her mother explained " It's just the way things are for us,
you are now old enough to survive on your own so our owner will sell you to a new
home."
This upset Dove, she didn't want to leave her mama. "I'm scared mama," Dove
whispered.
"I have raised you to be a brave little filly. You must learn that in life there will be
difficulties and troubles, it's the way that you handle these situations that will set you
apart from the rest," said her mama.

Then her mother nuzzled against her neck and said in a quiet
voice for only Dove to hear, "No matter where you are I will
always love you. You are my Dove, you are special and someday
you WILL fly high."
A few weeks later, just as her mother had predicted, the owner
of the horses came to the pasture. He rounded up the foals and
separated them from their mothers. All the foals cried and
whinnied for their mamas, except for Dove.

She was brave just as her mama had told her to be. She looked
at her mama and they nickered to each other one last time.
Then Dove got in the trailer and left the only home she had
known, forever.
As the trailer pulled away Dove's mother ran down the fence
line and called to her daughter "Fly high my Dove fly high to the
sky!"
All the other foals cried and whinnied for their mothers as the
trailer pulled away. They panicked and began to fight amongst
themselves. But not little Dove, she stayed away from the
others and watched out the window as her mother slowly
disappeared.
