So photosynthesis starts with the sun shining on a plant. The sun is the source of energy that the earth needs.

2
What is photosynthesis? You're probably wondering, well photosynthesis is the process of which a plant cell captures energy in sunlight to make food, which is called photosynthesis.
The equation for photosynthesis is 6 CO2+6 H2O +light energy----->C6 H12 O6+ 6O2

3

Photosynthesis happens in the leaves of a plant, but to be more specific, in chlorophyll which is located in the chloroplasts.
Chlorophyll is the colored chemical compounds that absorb light and make the plant green.

Chlorophyll

4
The first stage of photosynthesis is capturing the energy in sunlight. Chlorophyll captures light energy and uses it to power the second stage of photosynthesis.

5
In the second stage, the cell uses the captured energy to make sugars. The cell needs two things for this, water and carbon dioxide. the roots of a plant will absorb the water, and the carbon dioxide (which is a gas in the air) will enter through an opening in the leaf which is called a stomata.

6
Once in the leaves, the water and carbon dioxide move into the chloroplasts. In the chloroplasts they make a complex series of chemical reactions that produce as chemical products. One of the products is C6 H12 O6, which is a sugar that is also called glucose. Cells use the energy in the sugar to carry out important functions. The other product that they make is oxygen.

+ = C6 H12 02 and O2

Cells then release the oxygen through the stomata into the atmosphere. Then humans breathe in the oxygen. Almost all oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere was produced through the process of photosynthesis

A human breathing in oxygen.

7
After photosynthesis, the process of respiration starts. Respiration is the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose. During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as sugar and release the energy they contain.
The equation for respiration is C6 H12 O6 + 6 O2 -------> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy.

8
The first stage of respiration takes place in the cytoplasm of a cell. There, molecules of glucose (the sugar that photosynthesis makes) is broken down into smaller molecules. Oxygen isn't involved with this, and very little energy is used.
