The Central Nervous System

The Central nervous system is made up of three major parts which are the spinal cord, nerves, and brain. The spinal cord sends important messages to the brain. Your nerves are responsible for you being able to know when someone or something touches you. The brain allows you to talk, think, move, and even breathe.

Brain

The human brain is split into different parts that all play an important role in keeping you alive. The cerebrum allows you to think and learn new things. It also controls your ability to touch, see, hear, taste, and feel. The cerebellum controls your movement, everything from walking to running happens because of this part of the brain. The medulla controls your breathing, keeps your heart beating, and regulates blood pressure. The brain stem receives the messages the spinal cord sends and passes them onto the brain. The body ratio of the human brain is 500 times greater than that of the stegosaurus!.

Spinal Cord
The spinal cord is the second part of the central nervous system and is connected to the brain by the brain stem. A bony structure protects the spinal cord from damage known as the spinal column. The spinal column is made up of many individual bones called vertebrae. The spinal cord is basically a bundle of nerves that carries messages to the brain. It connects the brain with the peripheral nervous system. The spinal cord varies in length between men and woman. In men it is about 45cm and in woman its about 43cm.

Peripheral Nervous System

The peripheral nervous system is split into two parts known as the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.

Autonomic Nervous System

The autonomic nervous system is split into two main parts which are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The autonomic nervous system controls the smooth muscle of internal organs such as the heart, stomach, and intestines. Smooth muscle moves on its own and is made up of many thin layers stacked on top of one another. The autonomic nervous system is whats responsible for the " fight-or-flight" response that kicks in during stressful situations.

Sympathetic Nervous System

The sympathetic nervous system originates in the spinal cord. The fight-or-flight response that was mentioned earlier comes from this part of the autonomic nervous system. When that response kicks in stored energy is put to use, your digestion slows down, your heart beat quickens, and blood pressure sky rockets.
