Once a upon a time there was a rich king, a very rich king, who had whatever he wanted. He really had everything and people called him happy, until he mysteriously lost his appetite and didn’t want to eat anything. He gradually became thinner and thinner and started acting strangely, grumbling all the time. A lot of doctors came to see him but their medication was useless for him. The king’s condition got worse and day by day he grew even thinner.

‘Listen to me, my king! As I see it there’s nothing wrong with you. What is responsible for the loss of your appetite is the bread they feed you at the palace. You must order them to bring you the sweetest bread in the world. Then you will be fine!’

Till one day, a poor old white-haired man happened to pass in front of the palace. The old man was very wise and knew a lot about remedies. ‘Are you tired, my king?’ he asked the king. ‘What are you saying, my doctor?’ the king said to the old man. ‘I’m lying in my throne all day long and I don’t move at all'. ‘Maybe your mind is occupied with a lot of things. Do you worry about your people?’ ‘No not at all. Have you ever longed for something you couldn’t have?’ ‘No, of course not. I’m the king and whatever I ask for is right in front of me!’

The next day the king ordered the bakers in the palace to knead and bake ‘the sweetest bread in the world’. So all the bakers got down to work, trying to prepare the sweetest bread for the king. They used sugar and the best ingredients, but none of those kinds of bread made the king find his appetite again. He didn’t even want to try them. He thought one was worse than the other. One day he got so angry that he sent for the old man.

‘I will hang you! You fooled me!’ the king yelled to him. ‘Why your majesty?’ the old man asked. ‘Because the sweetest bread you told me to eat was no good!’ ‘Oh, is that so?’ the old man wondered. ‘ The king was ready to get angry again but he noticed that the old man was thinking about something, so he waited.
‘My noble king, please listen!’ said the old man after a while. ‘If you want to try the really sweet bread, which will cure you, you need to do exactly as I tell you. If you don’t get well then you are free to cut my head off!’

So the king, my child, whether he wanted or not, he accepted the old man’s offer to follow him wherever he chose to go. He, as well, got dressed in rugs, put on a pair of worn out shoes, took hold of a stick and left the palace without any notice. They went far away to a flatland where the old man’s hut was in a sowed field.

At the crack of dawn, the old man gave the king a sickle and told him ‘Come, my king, it’s harvest time.’ So the king was reaping under the hot sun for the rest of the day. He made about forty packs of ears. As it was getting dark, they went straight to bed. They had no food, no nothing for the whole day. You see, because of the king, the old man had nothing to eat, either.
