Track season was starting and everyone expected Charles to be the best. He was a cheetah, how could he not be the fastest sprinter on the team? He hadn't had a race yet, but all the other students and coaches expected him to win. Even his parents seemed to think he would automatically be number one. Charles was doubtful of his ability. If he didn't win, what would everyone say? What would they think?

I need to win!
3
Charles was so worried about losing the race that he began training non-stop. He quit hanging out with his friends and doing other activities that he enjoyed. He practiced and worked out all of the time, putting his body under tremendous strain. He began to have headaches and feel tired and irritable. He did not stop his extreme fitness regimen though because he wanted to make sure he was doing everything he could to be the best. He did not want to disappoint anyone!

Faster! Faster!

One day Charles pulled a muscle in his leg. After being treated by the team's trainer and talking to his coach, he was finally convinced he needed to relax. They both encouraged Charles to reduce and manage the stress he was feeling so that he did not cause himself further harm. With their support and also his parents', Charles found ways to take "time outs" during his day to help him relax. He enjoyed watching shows on TV and playing video games to calm himself down. He was starting to feel better.
